It's a in-between week, yes, but with a difference this time! After seeing countless adverts for it in game magazines, I finally got a copy of the game, The Plot Thickens (sci fi edition)! With it in hand, I decided to try something fun, read on to find out what, but first, over to our favourite duo.
See? Riz is British in his heart with his love of complaining!
The Comic Tales of Brennan and Riz
Not much to say about this one, everything turned out like I wanted. A rarity I think you'll agree. Plus I already know what I want to do for nexf week, but it's going to require some research...Should be fun!
The Plot Thickens: A Solo Scifi Tale Part 1
So for those unaware, The Plot Thickens is sort of a boardgame. I say sort of as I can guarantee that you won't have played anythjng like it before. It's a game that was released by Bright Eye Games a couple of years ago. I'm aware it had some history prior to that through some contest that Hasbro did but that's not important for today. The game is played by the players telling a story with the cards they are given, and then, from the second turn onwards, are able to add other players cards into their own story. The idea is that the players are building a shared narrative of sorts rather than multiple completely seperate tales (indeed, one of the players is given the task of ending the whole thing!).
I've had my eye on it for a while as I loved the idea of what it was offering, being a very story driven person. I finally pulled the trigger on it when it happened to fall on a very good deal (I got it for £3 as the store had a 90% sale on it for some reason) sadly the other versions were full price (they released 4 genres for the game. Sci fi, Adventure, Detective and Romance) so I can't mix and match...yet.
It was after a few games did I realise the potential of this title outside of an amusing evening. Prompts.
This brings me to this week's main piece. I'm going to use the game to write a new, original (for me at least) sci di short!
The rules I'm setting up are as follows:
Once my hand is drawn, no going back. I'll be writing out what cards to keep myself on the straight abd narrow.
I'll be doing this story over 'three turns' effectively 6 weeks but a new part will alternate with the next chapter of Avalon Tales.
Explain the rules of the game where and when they're needed.
Seems simple enough yes?
Let's get to it!
To begin with, I shuffled each of the game's three decks (a person, a things, and a places deck. I then dealt myself three people cards and choose which one of them will be my character. I was given a Rock Alien, a Tentacle alien and a monster trainer. Not exactly a hard choice, but this story is going to be about a monster trainer. Next, I dealt myself a hand of five cards, one person card, two things cards, and lastly, two places cards. In order, these were Lizard Person, Armour, Cryo Chamber, asteroid and capital. In the proper game, whatever context I set for these cards, the other players must abide by if they use them.
With the cards set, lets go!
----------
My name is Clive Stern, and I'm a high class monster trainer, one of the best this side of the Astroid belt. Or at least, I used to be. Now, I wasted my time in different dives around the capital. It was in one such place that someone finally found me, though it wasn't the person I'd hoped it would be. It was an operative from the Federation, a Lizard Person named Resene. She wasted no time in telling me what she wanted. She claimed to have a job that only I could do, and that I was going to have to undergo cryosleep to do it. This didn't fill me with confidence. With nothing else I could do though, I grabbed my armour...
----------
With all cards played out, that is the end of this part!
Now, I'll redraw my hand upto five, with no limits on which deck(s) I can draw from. I'll be adding the ghost writer mode which will add three random cards to the mix that I can use next time.
With that said, we're finished for this week. Next week we're back to Avalon Tales, so refresh your memory with chapter 9 here, and check back next for chapter 10!
Till next time...
Keep on writing!
