#21 Not So Sweet Child Of Mine + Update

 Happy Blog Day Everyone!

A short one this week as I've got lots to be getting on with and to top it off, I've been knee deep in Arthurian myth all week. More about that next week...

But first!

The Comic Tales of Brennan and Riz

I think kids are easier to deal with than a talking rat but mixing them is probably a bad move...I mean, what would Riz teach them? Nothing good I can tell you that!

However, there may be a child (abeit an older one) joining our cast in the near future, once I pull my finger out and get the story written.

I also may have thought of something for issue 25 and onward, watch this space.

Update

So last week, I set upon the task of completing 4 short stories. I'm happy to say that I've completed 2 of them! Yes, this includes the short story I've written consecutively about in this here blog, it's with the editor (for lack of a better word, it's going to be jointly edited by all the submitted authors). I'll go into more depth about it upon release like I always do. The other story is for an upcoming Harvey Duckman Presents anthology (number 15). Its a non-Brennan and Riz tale so I'm anxious to see if it makes the grade or not. If all goes well, I'll be talking about that one as well on release.

The other two have been semi-worked out with regards to what they're going to be about, just need to be written. In addition to this I'm hoping to start something else soon...

Releasing soon will be Harvey Duckman Presents Volume 14, so prepare for a breakdown of the Brennan and Riz story included in that, a nice little tale of a Teddy bear...I can't quite remember when that's releasing but as always, I'll provide links when I have them

Nothing else to add at the moment, yet it still feels like I've got a lot to do!

Till next time, Keep writing!

#20 Rat on Film + 20th Strip Spectacular

 Happy Blog Day Everyone!

Today, as promised, I'm going to talk more about the Comic Tales of Brennan and Riz, now that it's somehow lasted 20 issues, when I normally run out of steam a few weeks in. Which probably would have happened if the frequency was increased...

Anyways!

On to the 20th strip!

The Comic Tales of Brennan and Riz

This one I had the idea for a while ago but never quite got round to doing...and now I've done it, I'm worried what people will think or if I'm going to end up on a list!

There is a lot that can be done with Riz mind, need to figure out a way to get him into pi-rat mode (if you want more information about Riz's days on the high seas, please track down Harvey Duckman Presents Volume 12!).

P.S. the title is a play on a certain Duran Duran song...you know the one!

20th Strip Spectacular!

It feels odd that for the past 20 weeks that I've produced this Comic. While on paper it should have been a breeze to produce a simple 3 panel Comic weekly...This has not been the case for me. I'm far more chaotic with my time keeping than I'd like to admit. Finding the free time to get the strip done (along with everything else I have to do!) has been far harder than I thought, and has eaten into writing time a little bit.

However, that isn't to say this isn't worth doing.

Far from it.

The original concept of me doing a comic is quite old. People who read my blog about Ghost Duty may recall that the first incarnation for those stories was a webcomic that received all of 1 page drawn for it. After that I did a few attempts at doing a Daemon Soul comic of some description (mostly test pages, I'll upload them here at some point). After that came a short lived series (extremely short lived). This one was part of a web site that some friends created and I turned us into 'chibi' exaggerated versions of ourselves. There was three issues drawn and coloured, with a fourth in rough pencils. Again, I'll upload them at a future point when I can access the files. After that imploded (a mixture of friend issues and real life stuff) I didn't dare attempt any Web Comic of any kind for a long while-

Except that was a lie. You see, back in early 2012, before that ill-fated webcomic, I started a highly ambitious project, one that was too ambitious. I adapted the first chapter of Daemon Soul into comic form. I think I did a good job with it but the 2nd chapter had a very long time to wait.

So, there was no comic related activity from 2012 to 2021 when I finally plucked up the courage to do Chapter 2 of Daemon Soul. Again, I will upload them soon, just to people can bask in their awfulness.

This brings us to November 2022, when I was brainstorming ideas for promotion, a subject that doesn't really gel with me. Tik Tok was mentioned in the vein of doing skits with the Riz puppet I own, but I'm still not confident enough to do that. I needed to think of something else: enter this blog. This blog was created back in 2019 on the back of the release of The Strange Tales of Brennan and Riz. I tried my best to do regular updates but I failed and the gaps between posts got wider and wider till I stopped (on a Brennan and Riz Exclusive short story no less, one that I don't think anyone cares never got an ending.) Resurrecting the blog was an easy idea, but it wasn't enough, I needed something I could provide, even if I couldn't find much to speak about. Then I remembered the comics.

Over the following Christmas period, I started the design process:

Here you can see I tried a few designs, before settling on the simplified designs you see here now. Though character designs were only the first step as I needed something else: story ideas. Coming up with short story ideas is relatively easy compared to a three panel strip. Why so few panels? Mainly because I was inspired by comics who excel at that form like Penny Arcade and others. With this format, I needed to be quick and concise to the point. This has been harder than drawing for me, I don't think I succeeded half the time. If I'm feeling charitable.

As for the ideas so far, I've gathered them from different sources, some have come from my Brennan and Riz #vss365s others from the short stories themselves. Others just ask simple questions like why would Riz want to learn engineering?  Or what would a Riz-apult look like? I should point out that I often do pull the comedy a bit further than I would normally do.

Despite all that, I do have some favourite strips, first one being strip #4, where we see Riz sharing a drink with Mothman. I think it works really well and I love the effect I achieved with Mothmans eyes. Other than that, it would be strip #18 where Riz tries to enlist a cat into his schemes. With obvious results!

Where will the pair go from here though, well, there's a question. I suppose I should do something for the 25th, seeing as it's halfway to 50.

Anyway, I've waffled on for more than enough. I'll leave it there.

Till next time.

Keep on writing!

#19 Ain't It The Truth + I Might Be Mad...

 Happy Blog Day Everyone!

So you might be looking at the title with some confusion (especially if you followed the link from elsewhere as it cuts off the title at a certain point) but rest assured I'll explain in a moment as to why I think I've lost my marbles this time. Before that though...It's comic time!

The Comic Tales of Brennan and Riz

Not too happy with how this one turned out but hopefully next week's will make up for it. I should probably temper expectations that the twentieth issue won't be anything special compared to the normal fare as I'm saving that for the bigger mile stones like issue 50 (and maybe issue 25 but we'll see).

Still, I want to talk about the Comic more next week as I'm still surprised myself that it's continued this far.

I Might Be Mad...

So originally this week was just to be a brief update on where I was, and how that scrappy short story I was working on was doing (in case you're wondering, it's currently at 4200 words, do doing well!).

Then an email popped into my inbox.

It was from the good ole folk over at Harvey Duckman Presents (aka the anthology series that Brennan and Riz publishers 6th Element put out). At first glance it seemed to be an announcement for the imminent arrival of Volume 14, which features our favourite man and rat team. Reading further though reveals the future for the series...along with submission deadlines for the next few volumes along with associated themes.

So far so good.

My schedule is already busy as my original intention was to finish the short I was working on and then go back to finish all the 3rd Brennan and Riz short story collection. All it needs is a possible 1 or 2 more stories to complete it after all, then I could jump back into War of the Fae...

That all went all out the window.

I'm not sure what part of my brain thought this was a good idea but I've decided to try and get these three short stories done at the same time. In practical terms, this means that I'm working on four stories at once, with two of them getting priority over the others due to looming deadlines. Have I done any planning on these new stories as such that it might make my life easier? Have I heck. I have a general idea for the three, but that's all. Everything else will be plucked from my brain as and when needed.

Now, it's customary for their to be a Brennan and Riz presence in the Harvey Duckman Presents stories as they've been in every single one, but things must change with the times. Out of the four stories I'm working on, only one of them will feature Brennan and Riz. Two of the four will feature them same character (start theorising who that will be!) One will be a character I've very recently spoken about. Two will be themes that Brennan and Riz just couldn't have pulled off, for reasons you'll hopefully see, and I'll explain closer to the time.

Have I given myself enough time to get these stories done? Will I add even more to my plate?

Guess you'll have to find out next time!

Till then,

Keep writing!

#18 Sales Pitch + Daemon Soul Talk

Happy Blog Day Everyone!

Today's topic is about my other writing labour of love, and the one whose had a fair bit of work put into it...despite having only one short story actually published in that setting (with maybe a 2nd if I can get the bugger finished). I'll also share all the pics and tweets from the recently completed 7DayTale prompt from over on twitter, so be warned, this post is going to get a little image heavy!

Before all that though...

The Comic Tales of Brennan and Riz

Not going to lie here, I just wanted to draw a cat. There was ideas that this may be a specific cat, and maybe engage in more 'Tom and Jerry' antics but I decided to just leave it as an ordinary feline. I think it helps sell the last panel.

Though obviously, Riz will be fine, he'll just need a bath...

So About That Daemon Soul...

I've talked about this a fair few times now on this blog, but I wanted to give it the same look over as I gave Brennan and Riz a few weeks ago.

For those who don't know, Daemon Soul is a story idea/setting/multiverse that I first came up with back in 2005...Oh, how that seemed like yesterday and not the actual eighteen...*snip* Where was I? That's right, it's an idea that's stuck with me and been the focus of many of my attempts at drawing. I wrote the first draft from 05-07 with lots of changes along the way, characters dropped and what not.

The first story was (still is) called Daemon Soul: Awakening and centered on an 17 year old who finds his world view shattered when the mysterious Serena finds him. She tells him that its his fate to become the next Daemon Soul (lucky 13th at that) and everything spirals downward from there. Being the starting point of what I'd envisioned to be 5 books (later cut to 4, and honestly, god knows how many now) there was story threads introduced here that would only be paid off later down the line.

One of those threads was a little side character called Gabriel...Yes, THAT Gabriel. Here's the odd thing, while his behaviour wasn't changed much between drafts, his fate did. You see, he was meant to die in the 2nd book, sacrificing himself. That ending didn't last long.

The source for all of this came from my interests at the time, anime and video games. Bet you never expected that, eh? At the time, it seemed like a good idea, and it was something I wanted to do, despite how close it ended up hewing to already existing works. As to which particular things influenced Daemon Souls conception, I can name Devil May Cry as the main source, seeing Dante's look and personality led to certain decisions about the main character. There was also certain tropes that I borrowed, and a few negative ones I only learned about after the fact. Suffice to say there has been changes...

So, first story down, do I try to market it, see if anyone wants a story from a 20 year old or if an agent was willing to take me on? Did I heck.

No, what I did was throw myself into the 2nd book, called Daemon Soul: Requiem back then. This time, writing it only took a year, from 2007-08 and I doubled down on everything from the first story, introducing new characters along the way. Gabriel was further cemented as the evil git he is.

Can you guess what I did after this? If you said write the 3rd book, then you'd be correct!

Daemon Soul: Corruption was written in 08-09 and marked the shift in story that meant it was heading to the climax. There was lots of reveals and one of those unfortunate tropes reared its ugly head. Each story had had been longer then the last and this one was somehow near 200 pages, which would have been a door stopper of a book if formatted properly. It was an unwieldy beast, but I felt it was important then.

Naturally, I jumped straight to the 4th book, while doing bits here and there of an alternative timeline featuring a brand new character (who has ended up far more important than I realised then). This 4th book though, Daemon Soul: Dead World was never finished. The plot was more out there than the others, bringing the multiverse into it before it was in vogue. I did use the story setting a few times, notably in a role playing campaign using the big eyes small mouth system. It turned out to be a fun sandbox to play in.

This is where the series itself entered the wildness years as a series of social upheavals swept me up and I tried to get several spin offs off the ground, but they all stalled, and eventually, I just stopped writing. Then 2015 happened. Seeing a local author advertising his book led me to a certain publisher. To make it palpable, I ended up redrafting Awakening, and submitted the first 3 chapters...

This would be a massive mistake that almost broke me. I won't go into too much detail as I feel like it needs its own blog post, but let's just say I made an expensive mistake and learned to research certain publishers before I sign my life away (again).

So where does this leave us?

Flash forward to November 2017, where I first learned of Nanowrimo. Having not written anything in 2 years, I tried my luck and signed up. The story? Daemon Soul: Avalon. This was a drastically altered 2nd attempt at book 2, leading off from the last draft I did. I was now aware of other publishing options but couldn't pursue any of them yet. I failed that first year, running out of steam but it wasn't a wasted endeavour, as it returned my writing mojo that would prove instrumental when it came to a certain man and rat duo.

That duo would monopolise my time for the following few years but Daemon Soul was never far from my mind. I dropped characters into tweets and Gabriel found a new lease of life with the vssmurder and 7DayTale prompts, along side his retinue. Then last year, with the help of a fantastic beta reader, I redrafted the first story. I was fully intending to begin querying but it hasn't happened. Why? Because I'm afraid basically, afraid of it never finding a home. What about self publishing I hear you cry? That's a lack of skills and funds on my part.

I want to get this story out there, but...Well, that's where I am currently.

To stop this ending with a sad overtone, let's talk about something extremely recent.

Last week I promised you all the pictures I drew for 7DayTale, and I intend to deliver. I'll also post the text from the tweet as I didn't do a very good job of explaining through pictures like I originally wanted.

I've left the # in front of the vss365 word from that particular day just to show you what I had to work with, but I'll delete the tags. I'll also raise my hand up and admit I cheated for the 5th day onward, using two tweets instead of one, so there will be 11 pieces of text, instead of 7.

To set the scene, Rose is an amnesiac girl looking for her memories. She named herself based on a Rose she was carrying with her when found. She has supernatural abilities that are as mysterious to her as they are to others. The world she awoke in was of the post-apocalyptic variety, having suffered the Fall. In this story, Rose is investigating a library for answers...

The Library

Rose #winced at the musky smell as she forced open the iron doors, stepping into the old library. The dusty shelves filled her with awe and wonder, curious to see if their contents could offer a clue about who she was. A sound caught her attention...

Her senses #rebooted, she looked around nervously. That weird instinct told her something was close, then she saw the pale girl's face.

"You shouldn't be here," the girl whispered. "It's not safe."

"Not safe?" Rose asked. She was feeling more uneasy...

While it was obvious that the library hadn't seen any #traffic in a long time, Rose knew that they weren’t alone.

"Watch out!" the other girl screamed, as two large hands emerged from the darkness behind Rose, each covered in a swirling mass of letters.

Rose instinctively turned, #boycotting any fear she had. The creature seemed to be a walking pile of books, with a spirit animating it, its mouth gagged by strips of paper. Putting herself between it and the other girl, she took a stand.

As the thing strode forward, Rose threw herself at it. Mustering all her strength, she attacked again and again till the front of the thing's chest broke apart  revealing a #sensuous golden light. At the centre, a book and quill.

"That book..." the other girl cried, staring at the book wreathed in #sensuous light. "That's me!"

"What?" Rose asked, stepping to protect her again.

"That book wasn't finished, I...wasn't finished..."

Rose knew there wasn't any time to explain.

"Is that golden book yours?" Rose asked, setting the stage like a #screenplay.

"Well...Y-yes," the other girl murmured.

"Stay back...I'll get you that book!" Rose shouted as she ran forward, focused on helping her new friend.

The thing raged, but couldn't catch Rose as she darted around it. She took her chance with a move worthy of a #screenplay. She pulled the book free, causing the thing to collapse in an ethereal blaze. She walked up to the other girl, book in hand.

"The #nub was my author died before she could finish me...I mean, the story. That thing..." the other girl started saying.

"Was all your frustrations, your fears?" Rose asked.

"Yeah..."

"Well, we can fix that," Rose said as she started writing.

Rose wrote till the quill was little more than a #nub with a feather on it. As soon as she wrote the end. A change overtook the other girl, as she turned from a sprit, to a human who smiled with the brilliance of a sun.

"Thank you, Rose!" she beamed.

Rose didn't know that would happen, she just knew it was the thing to do. She, and the other girl, who named herself Midna, left the library.

"What are you looking for?" she asked Rose.

"The #nub of my existence," Rose smiled serenely.

Fin.

There you have it. Sorry for the obnoxiously long wall of text today, see you next time.

Keep on writing

#17 Was That Always There?

 Happy Blog Day Everyone!

Yup, it's another brief one as I'm still mulling over the topic I want to write about, but I do have a couple of others lined up, not including the #20 issue spectacular!

Anyway, on to the comic!

The Comic Tales of Brennan and Riz

Another experiment here, the three panels forming one long scene. Did I do the best with it? No, but I'm glad I tried it, and I will undoubtedly will try it again in the future, as always, just need the right idea.

Weekly Update

So, aside from failing to get enough words down on what I wanted to talk about, what have I been doing?

Well, for starters, I was able to turn the page on my short story work in progress, pun intended. Yes, it's still not finished, but I've actually been writing every night so far (rewriting parts, but it still counts!), I'm hopeful that I can finally finish it soon, as I've got everything where it needs to be.

Other than that, things are as they've always been, but there has been some exciting developments regarding the Harvey Duckman Presents anthologies, which means, a completely new Brennan and Riz tale. I look forward to writing about that when I'm able to as the prompt was a good one. Also, being completely mad, one of my entries for the monthly #7DayTale on Twitter (@Brennan_and_Riz) has been another experiment.

So, a quick primer. 7DayTale is a hashtag on twitter that takes place at the beginning of every month. You're given a theme, and some prompt words if you want. While I have one thread featuring Brennan and Riz, the other, is about a girl called Rose. This is already a departure of sorts as normally, this is where Gabriel comes out to play. This time, he's ceded the role to Rose, but it's fine, they're both part of the same universe anyway...but that's not important right now. What is important, is that to accompany Rose's story, I decided to draw an accompanying picture to aid the story. Sounds straight forward doesn't it? Not in practice, as I combo the story with #vss365, using the daily prompt to write that days installment. So, I have to draw the picture for a part of the story that hasn't been written yet, but will somehow fit a word that I don't know yet...Fun right?

By the time this goes live, I'll have posted the 3rd segment (at time of writing, I haven't even drawn it yet). Next week, it'll be all said and done and I'll share all the artwork (which is a generous term for them) that I created. It'll be fitting, as it will tie into what I wanted to talk about anyway...

Till next time,

Keep on writing!

Peter James Martin
