#185 The Truth He Swears + The Plot Thickens Part 2

Happy Blog Day Everyone!

It's an in-between week, as Chapter 11 drops  next week (read Chapter 10 here!) but we do have part 2 of my Plot Thickens writing experiment.

Writing has been thin on the ground but has been happening, but there's not a lot to say on that front. I fear my low mood is on the rise again...

Let's move focus though, to oue favourite duo...Wait, did Riz do the art here?

The Comic Tales of Brennan and Riz

Yeah...Riz? Don't take this the wromg way, but your art skills suck. Don't bite me! There's a sort of a two parter Comic Tales of Brennan and Riz coming very soon, it shouldn't be overly long, only have two parts planned so far.

Keep an eye out for it!

The Plot Thickens: A Solo Scifi Tale Part 2

Time to get on with my "The Plot Thickens" experiment!

Check out the first part here!

So it's the second chapter (out of three),  and as I'm doing Ghost Writer mode, the player-not-there played the following three prompts:

Towel, Captain, Throne Room.

Now, I don't necessarily have to use any of these three but, the option is there.

Then it was time to refill my hand and I drew five more cards, pulling two cards from the things, two from the places, and one from the persons deck.

The cards are:

Engineer, Galaxy, Spaceship, Fighter, Tractor Beam.

Now let's continue the story!

----------
Resene led me to her fighter, which she assured me her ship's engineer had upgraded fully. It wasn't long before we were in deep space, and my thoughts drifting back to cryosleep. It was then that warning sirens started blaring, and we realises we were caught in a tractor beam, a large spaceship appearing behind us. The captain of the ship started to hail us...

Meanwhile...
----------

Seems like Clive has got his work cut out for him! What is he going to do to get out of this situation? Well, guess we'll have to see next time!

Now, the third part should be the last due to the game's length, but I'm tempted to split it into a further two parts as there's the third chapter, and then the last chapter where I get free reign to end it. I think I'll settle it when the time comes of course.

That's it for this week, not an exciting post, but that's what happens when it's an in-between week!

Remember, chapter 11 of Avalon Tales drops next, so read last weeks chapter now to get caught up!

Till then...

Keep on writing!

#184 Riz Tales + Short Diversions: Avalon Tales Chapter 10

Happy Blog Day Everyone!

We've reached Chapter 10 of Avalon Tales! We shift back to Isabelle with this one, as she pokes her nose into places where she shouldn't be! Want to see what she finds? Well, you can read about it below!

My writing has been coming out in dribs abd drabs as I sink into a lull, but I'm hopeful that a holiday is all I need to pull me out of this funk and get my head down, especially since the finish line is technically visible, far onto the horizon. I think I need to find a way to make these writing stints more manageable in a way where I don't start off strong and then crash and burn mid way through. Moving to one a month is doable I suppose but then it would take a year and a half to get anythng finished. Need to think about it I suppose.

Anyway, let's move onto Brennan and Riz and see what's up with them, though it looks like it might just be Riz today!

The Comic Tales of Brennan and Riz

Riz Tales, Woo Hoo!

Just wanted to get that out my head, and if the original song isn't stuck in your head, then you must be impervious to ear worms!

Can't exactly remember the genesis of this strip, I just know it pretty much came out as you see here, fourth wall break and all. I believe the next two weeks issues will be simpler affairs as I have a lot to do behind the scenes. Of course, let's see if I stick to that!

Short Diversions: Avalon Tales Chapter 10

Last time, we saw Cade and Robyn join forces to help Isabelle, only to learn that she was already getting into the thick of things. Now, we pull the focus back on her as she explores the demon nest, looking to find any information she can, while also seeking to put an end to the Blood Brothers threat, but is that all that's going on?

Read on to find out!

Chapter 10

----------
Chapter 10: Into the Demons Nest

The industrial area had fallen silent, and Isabelle didn't like that. She’d expected to encounter some guards when she neared, someone keeping the outer perimeter safe from prying eyes or enemy reinforcements. Instead, there had been no one. Even when crossing the threshold into the area itself, walking in the shadows of dilapidated warehouses and the skeletal frames of machinery, there was no sign of any one, be it Avalon or otherwise.
This isn't right, this place should have been locked down tight. Where did dad go? Where did any of them go? Isabelle asked herself these questions as she carefully walked around, wanting to get to the site of her initial encounter. Her scar hadn't stopped throbbing the entire night so she'd been semi used to it, but the other feeling she'd been getting from it, one the entire time she'd been there, that was new. The only way she could describe it was as a wave motion, and while she didn't know exactly what it was trying to tell her, the fact she was feeling it at all was not a good sign.
Stopping for a moment to gather her thoughts, she glanced at the equipment attached to her belt, the demonic sensor, the same one that failed to warn her about the impending threat last time. As she expected it wasn't registering anything, the needle flickering lightly but not enough to register a change. Isabelle quickly discounted its result as the atmosphere where she was told a different story. The air felt oppressive and the building's silhouettes twisted when not in the centre of her point of view. She knew that something was greatly wrong. Having memorised the deployment maps, she knew that the industrial area, while large, wasn't as dense as where she was, the walk to her goal should have taken her only five minutes, ten at most. Yet she was nowhere near where she wanted to be, and it had already been twenty minutes. She moved closer to one of the buildings, and noticed how the wall actually looked, like an image had been stretched to fit the frame. From the looks of it, the warehouse should have been made from corrugated iron sheets, so she should have been able to run her hand over it, feeling the bumps, but instead, despite how it looked, it was perfectly smooth. She pulled her sword from its resting place, and got in a combat stance as she’d seen enough of this place to know that it was hiding something. Carefully, she slashed the wall, and the expected noise of steel on steel was replaced by nothing as the sword cut through thin air.
This whole place…She said to herself as she came to the realisation about what she’d wandered into. But, where is my father? The sound of footsteps caught her attention, heavy thuds that no human could have made, not normal ones anyway. These were nearby, but she couldn’t see the source yet. The way her scar was feeling though, she had an inkling that she was about to come face to face with a demon. Ducking down behind a small wall, she waited as her suspicion was proved right. The monster was of a similar type to the ones that ambushed her and her team earlier that night. This one was on its own though and was moving with no urgency, it twisted its head at regular intervals, and Isabelle recognised its actions for what they were. It was doing a security sweep. Keeping herself out of sight, Isabelle saw a unique opportunity, and sought to take advantage of it.
Waiting till it had passed, Isabelle, keeping low, followed it, ducking behind whatever cover she could find. From this vantage point, she could see more evidence of how this demon came to be by the number of surgical marks over its body, tell tale signs that the creature had been pulled apart and then sewn back up again. What bothered her now, was if the creature was looking around because she’d been detected somehow, or if this was all routine, and her arrival had gone unnoticed. She’d preferred the latter, as she doubted she could storm the base all by herself. The demon seemed to stop every other step, checking every direction as it was going, then, it turned to go down a side route, one that wouldn’t give much cover. Isabelle resolved to carry on though, and duly crept forward to see where the demon had gone, and was delighted to see that it was heading down stairs that shouldn’t have been there. She realised quickly that this meant her suspicions about this place were correct. That huge demonic presence that Rei spoke of, this weird illusion that had fallen on the area it all pointed to a simple fact. The Blood Brothers base had been under their feet the entire time.
I have to let Dad know…Wait, his team wouldn’t have missed any of this… Isaeblle thought as she looked around at her surroundings once more. Since she came to realise what was going on, more and more of it seemed to warp. The signs were there, even down to the silence when there should have been at least a hum of noise in the background as the rest of the world moved on. Instinctively she reached for her shoulder where her scar was, and almost like intuition, she felt afraid for her father. From what he had explained to her, to what was going on now, all signs pointed to him walking into a trap, one that even he would find it difficult to escape from. Isabelle;s drifted down to the stairs that led downwards. It was clear that she had two options, the first was to keep exploring up here in the hopes that she wandered into anyone from Avalon, someone she could explain the situation to. Then they would have to get the message to everyone else, adding more links in the plan’s chain that could fail. The second one, and the one that was calling her most, was to go down into the base herself, and face the threat head on. If she could spoil the trap before it was sprung, then that would be enough for her, even better if she could reclaim the Holy Grail which had obviously been taken as bait..Clutching her sword tightly, she started towards the stairs, slowly at first, just to see if the demon was still there or if it moved further in its patrol route. She was doing this alone, but she was glad in a way, no one was going to get hurt because of her choice. Taking a deep breath, she steeled herself and started down the stairs, her eyes fixed ahead of her as more of the dimly lit staircase came into view. The construction had been haphazard, with no finesse involved, as though the only concern was to make it stable, there was no change with this regard the further she went down, diving deeper and deeper underground till the steps met the ground, which in keeping with the appearance of everywhere else, was raw earth with wooden panels laid down to provide some support, though they were broken in multiple places on account of the demons that had been treading on them in number. She took in the dank smells of the corridor, noting the lights that had been strung together to provide abysmal illumination. So far, she couldn’t see any off shoots from this corridor that would allow her to start looking around, so she was forced to follow the direction that was open to her. The thought of a security system hadn’t strayed too far away from her mind, but so far, she hadn’t seen anything that resembled a camera.
Then again, do demons even need anything like that? She reasoned to herself. The only consolation, as she saw it, was that there hadn’t been a stampede of demons on her position, meaning that either they didn’t know yet that she was here, or they didn’t care, indeed, if it was the latter, she might have played into their hands by coming down here. If that was the case, Isabelle was just going to have to prove to them that they would be obstinate to the extreme in doing as they wished.
Hearing a sound from the end of the corridor made her tense up. It was a demonic growl, and it was in multiple. Isabelle stopped and quickly scanned the walls she’d passed, hoping to see any sign that they were movable. Paying close attention to the floor, she discovered a patch where it seemed like a muddy footprint ended up halfway under a wall. Still there was no obvious signs of entry, no way to get the door to open, inspecting it closer she noticed small sections of the wall that could be flipped up, and this part of the wall continued four such things. The contents of the first two looked reminiscent of ammo clips, though as if you asked someone who had a vague idea of what they’d look like to create some from memory. They clearly wouldn’t fit in her Avalon Issue weaponry, which only meant that they were designed for the demons,
Demons using weapons was not a new thing. Many demons seemed to be born with some weaponry to hand, be it claws or other bladed weapons that emerged from their own being, there had even been instances of the demons using human weaponry that they either scavenged or stole from the still warm bodies of their kills. Then of course, there was the demon weapons, which as the name implied, were demons bound to weapons through processes not entirely known to Avalon,. The existence of these ammunition clips, spoke that the demons were making their own arsenals, separate to the aforementioned demon weapons. There was one obvious advantage Isabelle could see to this approach would be to quickly arm a fighting force, and there could be no good to come of that. Pocketing the ammo clips for now, she turned her attention to the other two small boxes, finding relief when one of them resembled a handle, that she slid the side, causing the wall to fall backwards and slide partially out of the way, revealing another corridor. She stepped through and then closed the door up, finding the same handle contraption on the other side of the door. After making sure the coast was clear in this new pathway, she pressed herself up against the door she had just come through and listened as several demons marched past, presumably on their way to the surface. From what she could perceive, it didn’t sound like they were in any kind of rush. From that, Isabelle concluded that they were another guard patrol, going out to make sure that their illusion was still in effect, and that no one was coming to pry.into their affairs.
Theorising that she was safe for now, Isabelle turned around and began to explore the new corridor she was in. Appearance wise, it looked identical to the first one, and now that she knew what to look for, there were doors all over the place, though to her surprise, the first ones she checked, all led to empty rooms, devoid of anything that might have given a clue to their purpose .However, scraps of newspapers offered tantalising information about when these tunnels might have been excavated. The dates on the scraps were from the late sixties, she could make out the first three digits as a one, nine and a six, but the other was smudged, still it gave her a decade to work with, and from the looks of things, the demons had just moved into this site, after all, demons could see in the dark, they had no need of lights like the ones that dangled above. The thought that Avalon itself had made this base could not be so easily dismissed.
Further exploration provided no further evidence that she hadn’t already come across, just more empty rooms. Her luck changed however when she found another tunnel behind one of the doors, and this tunnel looked nothing like the others, being much rougher, and the lights being much more haphazard. Inspecting them more closely, they looked more modern than the other ones. The corridor tilted downwards, and got wider as it descended. Now, Isabelle found herself in a massive chamber, with other openings in the distance. She walked into the middle of the space and looked around, trying to gauge the size and realised that if someone wanted, they could place a whole army in here. She had little time to dwell on any of this however, as her scar started pulsing, she strained her ears to see if she could hear footsteps from the way she had just come from. At first she could hear the distinct sound of someone heavy footed, but then it stopped. Everything went quiet and she began to wonder if the coast was clear when the room itself started to shake. Isabelle’s mind immediately jumped to the threat of an earthquake but then it became clearer. It was footsteps, the sound of thunderous footsteps echoing throughout the underground area. The wall near where she had came from seemed to erupt as a massive shape burst through it. Despite all the dust that had been kicked up, she was able to tell that the shape belonged to a giant suit of Knight’s armour. It was pitch black in colour and the joints seemed to be blue ethereal flames connecting the pieces of armour together. The giant lumbered forward, baleful burning eyes glaring at her from a visor.
“What manner of demon are you? Are you trying to insult us with that form?” Isabelle shouted angrily. She took aim and fired, wanting to see how strong the armour was, and to her non-surprise, the enhanced bullets did practically nothing, but the sound of metal bouncing off metal told her enough. The armour was literal armour, and not hardened skin seen on the stronger demons. She deduced that either the ethereal flames was the demon, possessing the armour, or that another demon was hiding inside it, extending the flames as a method of control, like a human driving a car. Unsheathing her sword, she activated its cutting edge, and stood her ground. The size difference between the two was immense, but nothing she couldn’t deal with, she had her duty to fulfill after all.
I can use it’s size against it, I’m far more agile than that walking heap of scrap. I take down the legs, I’ve won. Isabelle thought out her plan of attack, having seen nothing that would hinder it. With the distance she had between the pair of them, Isabelle studied its movements carefully, just as she had been taught to. She noticed that there was always a slight wobble just after its foot came down, and it was momentary, but it was all she would need. She charged forward, alternating between keeping an eye on her target, and what it was doing with its arms, the last thing she wanted was to be blind sided by a massive fist. In reaction to this, the giant stretched out to grab her, a move she easily avoided as it was lumbered around. Ahead of her was the target she was aiming for as the giant went to put its foot down again, wanting to steady itself in an attempt to squash her. This move provided her with what she wanted, and just as the foot slammed into the ground, she struck. Time seemed to slow as she watched as her sword and the her target came at each other, she held her breath when the blade made contact. There had been resistance, but not for long.
To her relief, the sword cut through the armour just as she’d hoped it would. Then as it followed it’s arc, it swung free. There was a splash of that ethereal flame from the opening, and she darted back to avoid it burning her. What she wanted to happen now, was for the giant to lose its balance and fall, either direction was fine with her.
That didn’t happen though.
The giant instead straightened itself up, and she could already tell something was different with it. It took another step forward, but there was no wobble anymore, and in fact, its entire movements seemed smoother. Before she even had time to register any other change, the giant slammed its fist into the ground narrowly avoiding her, but the shockwave hit her hard. She managed to roll as she hit the ground, preventing much of the damage, but the foe was already on her, as it moved to kick her. She couldn’t evade this one as easy as before so was clipped by the side of the armoured boot. She was knocked towards the far wall. She pulled herself up, and tried to calm the running thoughts that were circling her head, wanting to find a way to overcome the massive enemy. As if reading her mind, the giant changed its movement again, acting like it was now floating off the ground instead of any traditional movement. With immense speed, it closed the gap, its right fist at the ready.
For the second time in her life, Isabelle found herself frozen, unable to do much as the enemy went in for the attack. Her only reprieve came from the giant changing its target at the last moment, instead of going for her, it reached up, punching the ceiling. The result was instantaneous, as the roof of the massive chamber began to collapse. Regaining her senses, Isabelle looked to her left, seeing a passageway that was her only hope of getting out alive, She ran for it, but the giant struck the ground behind her, causing her to be thrown into the tunnel, the force of the blow caused her to lose consciousness. The last thing she saw was the rocks falling, sealing up the exit, separating her from the giant.

When she woke up, she was back in her old childhood bedroom, the early rays of dawn poking through the curtains. There was an old fashioned alarm clock dinging away, but she was trying her hardest to ignore it. What she couldn’t ignore was her mother standing in the doorway, arms crossed but wearing a more jovial expression.
“You can’t stay in bed all morning, you know?” Diana stated, her kind smile bringing tears to Isabelle’s eyes. “We’ve got a lot to do today, so let’s get up and meet the day!”
Isabelle wanted to rush out of bed, run to her, and wrap her arms around her as tightly as she could, but she couldn’t move.
“Time to wake up…” Diana repeated, her voice slowly fading out, as the surroundings lost all colour, and then all definition.
“...Time to wake up…” Her words became echos as another voice joined the fray, saying the exact same thing. At first they hid behind what Diana was saying, but quickly the roles were reversed, and the other voice took over.
“Time to wake up…” This other voice was male, and Isabelle woke up, finding herself in that same tunnel as before, but this time, she knew she wasn’t alone. The voice was still there, and the source was close by. Taking a look around, the corridor had rooms on each side of it that resembled prison cells, with metal bars forced and twisted into place. Now back on her feet, she started scanning the cells one by one, till she found the only occupied one. The occupant was draped in dirty robes, and wore a crown that had been crudely constructed out of barbed wire, with dried blood on his head from where the spikes had dug into his flesh. His eyes were closed at first, but he opened them slowly, revealing their light blue colour, then he spoke again:
“You have woken up I see…”

Next Chapter (not live yet!)

Well, that's another chapter down!

Next week sees the return of my 'The Plot Thickens' experiment, as new cards are drawn and added into the story.

#183 Can't Please Riz + The Plot Thickens Part 1

Happy Blog Day Everyone!

It's a in-between week, yes, but with a difference this time! After seeing countless adverts for it in game magazines, I finally got a copy of the game, The Plot Thickens (sci fi edition)! With it in hand, I decided to try something fun, read on to find out what, but first, over to our favourite duo.

The Comic Tales of Brennan and Riz

See? Riz is British in his heart with his love of complaining!

Not much to say about this one, everything turned out like I wanted. A rarity I think you'll agree. Plus I already know what I want to do for nexf week, but it's going to require some research...Should be fun!

The Plot Thickens: A Solo Scifi Tale Part 1

So for those unaware, The Plot Thickens is sort of a boardgame. I say sort of as I can guarantee that you won't have played anythjng like it before. It's a game that was released by Bright Eye Games a couple of years ago. I'm aware it had some history prior to that through some contest that Hasbro did but that's not important for today. The game is played by the players telling a story with the cards they are given, and then, from the second turn onwards, are able to add other players cards into their own story. The idea is that the players are building a shared narrative of sorts rather than multiple completely seperate tales (indeed, one of the players is given the task of ending the whole thing!).

I've had my eye on it for a while as I loved the idea of what it was offering, being a very story driven person. I finally pulled the trigger on it when it happened to fall on a very good deal (I got it for £3 as the store had a 90% sale on it for some reason) sadly the other versions were full price (they released 4 genres for the game. Sci fi, Adventure, Detective and Romance) so I can't mix and match...yet.

It was after a few games did I realise the potential of this title outside of an amusing evening. Prompts.

This brings me to this week's main piece. I'm going to use the game to write a new, original (for me at least) sci di short!

The rules I'm setting up are as follows:

Once my hand is drawn, no going back. I'll be writing out what cards to keep myself on the straight abd narrow.

I'll be doing this story over 'three turns' effectively 6 weeks but a new part will alternate with the next chapter of Avalon Tales.

Explain the rules of the game where and when they're needed.

Seems simple enough yes?

Let's get to it!

To begin with, I shuffled each of the game's three decks (a person, a things, and a places deck. I then dealt myself three people cards and choose which one of them will be my character. I was given a Rock Alien, a Tentacle alien and a monster trainer. Not exactly a hard choice, but this story is going to be about a monster trainer. Next, I dealt myself a hand of five cards, one person card, two things cards, and lastly, two places cards. In order, these were Lizard Person, Armour, Cryo Chamber, asteroid and capital. In the proper game, whatever context I set for these cards, the other players must abide by if they use them.

With the cards set, lets go!

----------

My name is Clive Stern, and I'm a high class monster trainer, one of the best this side of the Astroid belt. Or at least, I used to be. Now, I wasted my time in different dives around the capital. It was in one such place that someone finally found me, though it wasn't the person I'd hoped it would be. It was an operative from the Federation, a Lizard Person named Resene. She wasted no time in telling me what she wanted. She claimed to have a job that only I could do, and that I was going to have to undergo cryosleep to do it. This didn't fill me with confidence. With nothing else I could do though, I grabbed my armour...

----------

With all cards played out, that is the end of this part!

Now, I'll redraw my hand upto five, with no limits on which deck(s) I can draw from. I'll be adding the ghost writer mode which will add three random cards to the mix that I can use next time.

With that said, we're finished for this week. Next week we're back to Avalon Tales, so refresh your memory with chapter 9 here, and check back next for chapter 10!

Till next time...

Keep on writing!

#182 Still Needs Work + Short Diversions: Avalon Tales Chapter 9

Happy Blog Day Everyone!

I can't believe how fast these past two weeks have gone. Or that it's now July. Where has all the time gone!

I've actually been writing again, haven't finished a new chapter but its a start. I forsee a mad rush in my future to get things finished but...nothing new there eh?

There is something I want to try out for next week mind, which will either reignite my writing passion, or give me a bigger headache. Take your bets now which one it'll be.

One thing I didn't keep notice of, is that apparently I'm well over two hundred blog posts since I very first started! Should have probably paid attention to that sooner. I'll just have to make sure I do a proper celebration when we reach the 200th issue of the Comic Tales of Brennan and Riz! Far easier to track that!

Speaking of that pair though...

The Comic Tales of Brennan and Riz

In case anyone is wondering, this strip is a sequel to this one from over three years ago.

I had several different ideas with this one, some of which may end up in a hypotension 3rd strip. No good ideas are ever left to waste!

Short Diversions: Avalon Tales Chapter 9

With new resolve, Isabelle runs off to make her own choice regarding the mission, and the threat. What of the other Avalon personnel though? Will Robyn sit tight not knowing what happened with Isabelle? What agenda does Cade have? What secrets will be revealed now?

Read on to find out!

Chapter 9

----------
Chapter 9: Their Choices

Robyn was sitting uneasy, she’d been told everything that had happened to Isabelle, about her survival from Isabelle’s dad which was a complete surprise to even hear his voice, and then she was informed about her being sent back to headquarters by an irate Ramona. None of this would have been too bad if it wasn’t for the next edict that came down from Rainer himself, who had been insisting that he was still in charge of the operation. That one was that for now, they must all operate in complete radio silence, relying on visual directional cues to give further orders. She knew Isabelle too well not to know that she’d be dwelling on everything that had happened. She needed to talk to her, but instead, she found herself stuck on a rooftop overlooking Highdale’s high street, which was nowhere near the operational area.
Her squad had welcomed the change in scenery, joking about how they could just skip the job and head to the pub, but to Robyn, it added to the already sketchy nature of that evening's operation. Hearing that Leo and his retinue was mixed up in all of this didn’t come as much as a surprise to her considering what Rei had relayed to her before the radio silence rule came into effect. In fact, she had to consider whether the two were related.
She looked through her binoculars, ostensibly looking for the demons that Rainer had proclaimed would be driven from the industrial area. What she was really looking for was Ramona, she felt like out of all the higher ups, she was the only one that was listening, despite having her own hands tied up theoretically speaking. She was so busy looking down that she didn’t notice that superior officer had already made the short climb up to her position, only becoming aware when she heard her two subordinates quickly falling over themselves to salute.
“Knight Master Ramona ma’am!” They said, practically falling over themselves.
“At ease, gentlemen,” Ramona said, dismissing them with a wave before addressing Robyn. “What an evening eh?”
Robyn offered a salute, but the tone that Ramona was using didn’t sit well with her.
“What an evening? What an evening! How can you say that considering what happened? All that talk about this being a routine operation were just bullshit weren’t they?”
“I get that you’re angry with what's happened with Isabelle, and I am too! She’s one of my best soldiers and they just tossed her away! The threat level here has just been elevated yet those idiots in charge are limiting our forces. This isn’t how things should be run,” Ramona looked as though she wanted to scream in frustration, and Robyn got that, but that didn’t help any such way.
“So what? I’m just to lie back and accept it? Isabelle needs me, and I’d rather be sorting that mess out rather than sitting here!”
“You do realise that’s why I came here to talk to you, right? None of this has sat right with me, and if there’s anything I can do to try and make things better, I’m going to take it. Even if that means going over the heads of people who have their heads stuck up their arses,” Ramona walked around Robyn till she was standing next to her, facing out over Highdale.
“And how are you going to make it better?”
“By relieving you of duty of course! I mean, you look like you might have a really bad cold, can’t have you infecting everyone with your horrible germs can I? So you run along, maybe try and catch your beloved Izzy before she gets taken away. I’ve got more than enough hands on deck here to make short work of any demon that tries to get in our way.”
     “I don’t have a cold though?”
“If anyone asks me, yes you do.”
“And my squad here?” Robyn gestured to her two team members who were doing their best to sound like they weren’t listening in on everything.
“They can join my team, three man squads were a stupid idea anyway, and I don’t know why Rainer insisted on them so much. Either way, you’re free to go and don’t worry, you’ll still get paid for the time,” Ramona winked.
“Are you sure about this? I can’t say that either Rainer or the Lord Commander is going to be happy with this.”
“You leave them to me, this ain’t my first rodeo don’t you know, now go before I change my mind at how nice I’m being.”
“Wait, what’s going on?” one of Robyn’s squad mates asked.
“I’m in charge now, so you’re going to do what I say, got it?” Ramona said addressing them.
“Thank you,” Robyn said as she sorted her gear out.
“You’d better hurry up if you’re going to catch Isabelle, her transport isn't too far away from what I can tell.”
“Don’t need to tell me twice!” Robyn took off without as much as a second glance.
“Where’s the knight captain going though?” she heard one of the others say, and although she couldn’t hear Ramona’s reply clearly, she was certain that he was put in his place just as fast.
Hopping down to the street from the makeshift rope ladder, Robyn quickly found her bearings, she knew it was only about a ten minute walk from where she was to the industrial park, and then a short walk from there to where Isabelle had been told to wait. Annoyingly, she knew there wasn’t a direct short cut which would make things easier. She ran the length of the alley way till she reached the part where it met an offshoot of the high street. From there, she kept a controlled pace while there were other people around. She checked her watch and was surprised to see it wasn’t even eleven yet. She let out a sigh knowing that her bed was still far away, but there were other concerns that needed more focus right now. She tried to keep away from people where she could, not wanting anyone to have a close look at what she was carrying. After a tense period and a lot of unwanted attention, she made it out of the high street, and thus, out of the current operation zone. Looking back, she spotted her squad still on that rooftop, now joined by Ramona and a couple of others. There was doubt in her head about her decision, being part of Avalon meant she had a duty to fulfil, she should have still been over there watching out for demons, especially at times like this when the threat was greater, but at the same time, she couldn’t leave Isabelle like this. She turned her back to her comrades, and continued on, through the streets that slowly shifted to the industrial area. Even though she wasn’t supposed to enter, she couldn’t help but peek through the fence as she passed, she couldn’t see anything going on but could see plenty of evidence that something was going on, as the ground was broken in many places and there was bullet holes visible.
“If you’re looking for anything in there, you won’t find anything you’re looking for,” Cade said as he approached from behind.
“Cade? I mean, Knight Inquisitor Anderson! What are you doing here? Shouldn’t you be in the thick of it with the Lord Commander and Master of Arms?” Robyn asked, managing to keep her composure.
“I’ve had other matters to take care of, and I’ve been in contact with your sister…” Cade pointed to the receiver in his ear, a type Robyn had never seen before. At that moment, Cade’s face twisted as a burst of noise was heard, Robyn didn’t even need to hear it to know it was her sister. “She wants to talk to you…” Cade took the receiver out and handed it over. Robyn put it in, and the minute she did, she was subjected to the same rant that Cade had to endure.
“WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU ALL PLAYING AT OVER THERE! FIRST YOU TAKE THE WRONG BLOODY EQUIPMENT, THEN YOU TURN OFF ALL THE SODDING RADIOS!” Rei’s voice came in as worse than the harshest static.
“Hi sis, it’s lovely to talk to you again too. Also, haven’t we already had this conversation when I told you to tell Izzy?” Robyn questioned.
“It was worth repeating as it’s clear that something very stupid has infected everyone over there.”
“Well, I’m not going to argue with that, but are you really calling Izzy’s dad stupid?”
“Yes, clearly I am, as he ignored my advice!”
     “Your advice?”
“Yes, why am I repeating things? Don’t tell me you’re going stupid too!”
“No, you’re just really bad at explaining things! Let’s start over, do you know why the Lord Commander is here?” Robyn changed how she referred to Isabelle’s dad as she could feel Cade’s stare drilling a hole in her head.
“He rang me earlier asking why I’d authorised the Holy Grail being moved from the main headquarters and took it to Scotland. I replied ‘that was absolutely crazy, as I’d hadn’t done anything like that’. He and his team left to intercept the convoy and retrieve the Holy Grail but those demons got it first! Then, to make matters worse, they bore down on that place you ended up.”
“Okay, I know I said let’s start over, but I’m already lost, what the hell is the Holy Grail in this context? Not the actual Holy Grail right?”
“Please save all questions to the end, ‘kay? So, the situation as it stands right now, is that the Lord Commander Dimwit is running around with his team trying to retrieve the Holy Grail, Master of knobheadedness Rainer is doing something, and I can’t contact anyone because it’s clear that someone in the middle of all this is screwing everyone else over!”
Robyn was left speechless at the accusation at the end. The way her sister had dropped it so brazenly.
“Look, I know it’s okay to be in awe of me, but please keep it brief, we’ve got a lot to do tonight, and I need you to focus, got it?” Rei stated calmly.
“Me? You’ve basically just told me that there’s a traitor in our midst without any explanation and now you’re telling me to focus? Not to mention all this talk of a Holy Grail! You’re lucky you're not in front of me right now!”
“Good grief, you’re the one wasting time! Yes, I suspect there’s a traitor there as that’s what Cade was doing you dummy! Looking at your branch was just a cover story so no one questioned things. Plus look at it, someone deliberately picks the wrong scanners up, someone leads everyone into a trap while a major crime happens nearby. I know you’re not one for movies but, come on!”
Robyn looked over at Cade, who stood with his patience wearing thin as he overheard each and every outburst.
“Any ideas on who the traitor is?”
“Nope, I’m letting Cade deal with that, I’m trying to straighten everything else out from where I am.”
     “...And the Holy Grail?”
“You didn’t hear this from me as it’s well above your pay grade, but it’s a special formula that Avalon created. It was first created centuries ago but for a niche use that I definitely can’t talk about, bloody promises and all that. I’ve been tinkering with it to turn it into a more general healing agent for normal people, which I think is what was stolen, the bastards. Either way, we don’t want it in the demon’s hands, er, I mean claws.”
“Must be important if the Lord Commander personally went after it.”
“Right, are you sorted now? As time is ticking before something serious happens.”
“I was going to get Izzy first to be fair, I’m literally on my way to her.”
“Well, good news for you as according to the tracking devices that all your communication devices have on them, she’s on her way to you, or at least the area you’re currently in.”
“Wait, what? Are you sure?” Robyn shouted out, then she realised what her sister had just admitted to. “Tracking devices…really?”
“Shush, I like to make sure that I know where those I care about are. The first task is the three of you get together, then, according to my sensors, the great source or demonic activity is right near you, you’ll probably find the Holy Grail there, not to mention the traitor. Should you find that particular individual, please give them a damn good hiding from me. Those twats have given me a headache tonight. I’ll leave things in your hands okay? Be safe sis.” With that Rei signed off.
Robyn took the receiver out and handed it back to Cade.
“So, it looks like we’re buddies, Mr Knight Inquisitor.”
“It appears so, I suppose we’re meeting up with the Knight Major then.”
“You can call her by her name you know, and yes. Looks like the night isn’t through with us after all.” Robyn was putting on a brave face but what her sister had said had unnerved her. A traitor in Avalon’s midst, and the taking of the Holy Grail. She didn’t know what the demons they were facing were, or what plans they could have with it, but that someone who wore their uniform would gladly sell out their own kind.,, I left a bad taste in her mouth.
“Come on,” She said to Cade, facing the industrial area once more. “Let’s go find Izzy.”
