Highway to the Comfort Zone

Happy Blog Day Everyone!

Today, I want to share a few words on comfort zones. Won’t be a long one as I’m currently fending off a very nasty cold, brought on by the constant change of weather here. Don’t worry, got a bigger blog planned for next week to make up for today’s shortness. Let’s move on to the weekly briefs!

Weekly Briefs

Harvey Duckman Presents…Volume 3

You didn’t think that just because Volume 2 was out and getting stellar reviews that this would be the end of it did you? Volume 3 is set for an October release, in what is proving to be a very packed month for my publisher. I submitted the Brennan and Riz story for this volume this past weekend, after having promised it for a while!

I had to pull my finger out to get it down, but I’m happy with it after the many, many revisions I made, but of course, like always, I’ll talk about that in detail after the book releases.

Don’t forget, if you write Steampunk, Fantasy, Sci Fi or Horror (or a mix of the genres), then feel free to submit your work to this growing anthology! Click here for submission guidelines.

Crossing the Tees 2019

You’re probably tired of me going on about this, but I just want to bring as much attention to it as humanly possible, after all I owe everything to this competition.
There’s only a couple of weeks left now till the competition deadline of Midnight 31st July, if you’re entering and haven’t handed in your entry yet, then don’t delay! I’ve started my entry, but it will be going out of my comfort zone again…Which oddly enough, is the theme for today’s blog! Funny that…

Creator Chaos

The next in our, All About Me, series is lined up, and it’s everyone’s favorite #vss365 tweeter, Kelvin Rodriguez! He will be at the mercy of whatever questions you want to ask, so please throw some good ones our way…

On Sunday, we recorded the latest episode, with Kelvin as the host. Everything went well and now Zack has gathered all our audio up to begin the fun task of editing. I’m not one hundred percent sure when this episode will get released, so keep an eye out for it. By the way, I sing Sinatra on this one…Yes, it’s as bad as you’re thinking.

A reminder of who the rest of Creator Chaos are:

Me – I don’t think I need to explain myself…
Kelvin Rodriguez – Fans and followers of the #vss365 tag will recognize this fellow and his creations, a master of the pun. He also has a mighty fine singing voice.

Zack Brooks – Author of the ‘Charlie the Cupid’ shorts and ‘The Trials of Amaford” novellas, the audio book version of ‘How Not To Be A Rogue’ is out now! This is a perfect chance to get in on this series, with a great narrator. A great guy and the defacto leader of our rabble.

Pete Hartog – Author of the novel Bloodlines, and currently working on its sequel. A great guy with a great taste in music and a fantastic name. He also has a blog you can find here, give it a read! He’s currently working on a sequel to Bloodlines.

Highway Out of the Comfort Zone

I’m sure all writers are aware of what comfort zones are, those pesky little areas in which we’re really confident in what we’re righting (even if not confident that it will be any good or that anyone else will ever want to read it). These can be anything from genre to tropes that we include because we’re familiar with them. Looking at my recent output, you’d be quite right in saying that my comfort zones are urban fantasy...that is a contemporary setting with fantastical elements.

In my case, a rude talking Rat with an ego the size of a planet, and the fact that most folklore tales are real. Writing in this setting is a blast and I’m quite comfortable in it. I know what I can get away with, I know which elements I can do best and how much I can stick it in before people get wise to me. However, as you’ve seen on this blog already, I didn’t start with Urban Fantasy.

My first couple of years writing took me down the path of Action Horror, with guns blazing against genetic monsters born from sciences hubris and humanities greed. Then I turned to my Daemon Soul stories, something akin to what I was doing before but different at the same time. I had taken a step out of my comfort zone.

I would then spend the next few years working on Daemon Soul and its follow ups, crafting new characters and new worlds, enlarging my comfort zone to cover it all. I would then take another step out by embarking on writing a couple of short stories (Which you can read here), not only had I never written short stories before, but these were more straight up horror or weird fiction. Not that I stuck with them though, as I quickly moved on to another genre altogether.

This was the time where I was planning two very different series, Vector Unit Regen and Drache Arm Luna (both of which I’ve talked about before), these were Sci Fi and Fantasy respectively, and I put a lot of work into planning them, but nothing ever came as I quickly retreated back into my comfort zone with Daemon Soul, redrafting it, seeing it as my only hope of getting published...Of course I did try other ideas, try to branch out but I was getting stuck in the rut, a rut of my own making.

I found myself clinging to my comfort zone, afraid of attempting anything too radical, and found my writing stagnating. This led to me writing less and less. There was other reasons behind the scenes but the effect was still the same, till I read about the Crossing the Tees festival. I’ll spare the full details of Brennan and Riz’s first adventure as regular readers of the blog will know it quite well now. Writing that though pushed me out of my comfort zone for two reasons, one) it was a serious competition, so I was putting my all into it, editing it till perfection and two) it was first person, and I had so so experience in working in that perspective.

You all know the story after that, the next year I entered the Crossing the Tees festival again, with a radically different piece again, a sci fi short based around the idea of an Alien tour guide taking different aliens to Middlesbrough, a place near me. To date, this remains my only science fiction work to be traditionally published. It wasn’t till I heard and entered the Write Festival that I really stepped out of my comfort zone (which grew to encompass Brennan and Riz). Like the first Crossing the Tees, this competition had a theme that we had to adhere to. The theme for this one? It had to be uplifting. This was going to be a challenge.

At first I took it to be that the piece had to be happy, but I soon realised that as long as one part was uplifting then it didn’t matter. I left the realm of fantasy and stepped into reality. The story I wrote, ‘A Portrait Named Hope’ told the story of a depressed Painter who’s life is changed, finding a new reason to continue. This was so unlike anything that I’d written before that a few people who I’d shown it to before couldn’t believe I’d wrote it. I took this as a compliment.

This brings me to this years Crossing the Tees, where once again I’m going to take a leap out of my comfort zone, not to the extent that I’m doing historical romance, there is limits to what I can do...I haven’t wrote it yet so I can’t give too many details but I’m quite serious about giving it my all.
Now you’ve read all this and you’re probably wondering what my point was. It’s this. Comfort Zones can be a good or a bad thing depending on your perspectives. For me, going out of them give me a creative boost that I needed to re-jolt my writing, pushing me on to greater heights. It also gave me some catharsis for a few...personal demons I face.

I guess what I’m saying is that you shouldn’t feel afraid of trying something new if you’re tired of what your doing, you’ll never know what it will lead to.
Join me next week where folklore takes centre stage once again, till then, keep writing.

The Black Cat on the Prowl

Picture this, you’re lost on a desolate moor. You could have sworn that you were meant to go left, or was it right? The compass is no help and you always fell asleep during Geography, the one lesson that could have helped you read those little sign markers you keep coming across. The sun is waning in the sky and the wind is playing it’s best haunting hits, blowing through the rocky outcrops. Then you see it, or at least, you think you do. A flash of black, it’s movements giving the distinct impression that you’re being stalked. You try to run, but the ground is bog like, and as you fall, you see it again, in all it’s majesty. A Black Cat, a size belonging more in the zoo then some’s home, and it bares it’s claws...

The large cats of England, pets that got released, or just folklore is up for debate. Check out these stories for very recent sightings, and note that these are very typical of these kinds of tales. The Beast of Dartmoor, a leopard in Yorkshire, each region practically has it’s own variation on the same story, sometimes with proof, others just anecdotal accounts. It was a given that Brennan and Riz were going to encounter one at some point.

Now, given most tales, the Cat’s are rooted in the real world, while most people would no doubt offer a reward for one of these cat’s brought in alive, it still doesn’t seem like a job the pair would take up, which gave me an excuse to do a bit of tweaking. The tweaking this time led to me turning the big cats into something altogether...Different.

When creating a new creature, something that I haven’t found in folklore, I try to think about what it is they’ll end up doing, and if there is a future for them in the stories. For example, Water Ghouls and Ashen, will both be featured again at some point in the shorts. This was what I wanted for these big cats (and it’s also something I’d take into consideration for the story I’m planning for Volume 3).
The first thing I had to figure out was, what I wanted their purpose to be, are they just another animal? Are they man made? Can they talk? Answering these was simple, and I took the opportunity to tie these into Riz, in a very amusing way.

I began researching the name at this point, and decided to look into one of my other favourite sources of mythological tales, Ancient Egypt. I looked here because I knew of their reverence for cats, and that they had crafted a couple of deities to look like cats, carrying on their tradition of human animal hybrid gods. The god I homed in on, was Bast. Sadly I wasn’t able to carry out the link I really wanted, but the name give me the name I needed, and so the Bastlings came into being.
At the beginning of the story, I draw attention to the fact that this isn’t the first time that the boys are on the moors, and in true fashion it is a story that I have ready to go, another pleasant story of what happens when you let Riz navigate for you. I could have gone the other way though, but I wanted to remind the readers that the order the are reading in, isn’t necessarily the right order, and that I’ll end up slipping stories in at awkward times.
The story comes in at just about two thousand words, which makes it a slim rad compared to it’s contemporaries, but I think it gets the job done, especially at helping to prove that Riz is still capable of being afraid....

That’s all I have time for this week, remember keep writing!

Harvey Duckman Presents...

If you’ve been following this blog, you should be familiar with this title by now, I’ve been doing my best to keep you all updated on the progress of this anthology by 6e Publishing. The first volume released back in April but had been planned for a while longer. It’s an anthology that celebrates stories of Sci Fi, Horror, Fantasy, Steampunk…Why am I talking about this now? Well, because the series has been getting more traction and because Volume 2 is out this coming weekend!

My affiliation with series started with the publisher approaching me about putting a new story in as unnamed collection at that point. This was ‘A Walk Through The Pleasure Gardens’, a two thousand word story that I covered quite early on in this blog. Of course, I forgot about that story, instead focusing all the others that formed the first collection (that was Girl in the Water, Goblins in the Tunnel, Ghosts on the Moor) and then the full collection of the ten stories of that point.

My thoughts returned to it with the news that it was going to appear in the first Harvey Duckman Anthology (alongside some fantastic other authors). Things didn’t stop there with the release of the first as the second was already being talked about and I submitted another story, ‘Black Cat on the Prowl’ which I’ll be discussing next week. The idea behind these series is to give authors a chance, a chance to show what they could do, either as a writer with other work out, or as new authors about to see their first work in print. Which brings me neatly to my next point.

Do you want to give it a go? Are you a writer of Horror, Sci Fi, Fantasy, Steampunk, then test your mettle and submit a story (full guidelines can be found here), the publisher is looking for new work to show off, and it could be yours.

So the second volume, I can’t say if it will be good, as I’ve not read it yet, but I’m looking forward to it immensely because of the caliber of Authors in the first one (Read the Scarecrow). The book launches this coming Saturday (or preorder here on Amazon, either in paperback or ebook) and to commemorate this event, the publisher is throwing a launch event at the Kapow! Sci-Fi market, featuring an Authors Alley of all the Harvey Duckman Presents authors that can be dragged there and chained to tables. I’ll be there, with a special guest…You see, I came across something amazing…

Meet Riz…

Yes, if you come down to the market, you’ll get a chance to have a selfie with everyone’s favorite talking rat. He won’t bite…unless you tick him off.

So that’s all we have time for this week, keep tuned though, as I’m sure I’ll be covering Harvey Duckman again very soon.
Keep writing.

And now…time for our main feature presentation…

A Boy and A Rat, The Progress Report.

Let’s start with the basics, currently I’m on the end of Chapter 19, hopefully moving on to chapter 20 very soon. Then I estimate it will be ten chapters before this draft is finished. Too basic? Well the writing has got a rhythm going for it, flowing greatly one time, before slowing down, and right now, I’m in the slowing down part. This is probably because the chapter I’m working on, is very important in terms of book themes and because of the characters involved.

To recap, this story is largely told as a flashback, from Brennan’s point of view (meaning his snark is present as he looks over his memories, using hindsight to it’s fullest benefit) from when he was sixteen. A time when he had one friend, someone he depended on, trusted. That friend was...Merrick.

Then it shows how he met Riz, and that was the end of that life...So while this is ultimately a story of how Brennan and Riz met, it’s also a story of how Brennan’s life changed, and at the same time, how Merrick’s life changed.

Followers of mine on Twitter may know a character I tweet about sometimes, either as part of the #vss365 tag or the #satsplat tag. This character is Gallows, an antagonist who has no qualms about killing people in the name of his freedom or just to get under Brennan’s skin. Gallows debuts in this novel (that’s the other thing that’s been hard to adjust to, going from short stories to a full novel again) in the very first chapter, but even then he’s someone who Brennan and Co have dealt with, and this prequel shows that as well. Of course, there’s also another fan favourite character that appears half way through and steals the show, because of course she does, Valarie.

Back when I started the novel as part of the NaNoWriMo challenge, I was never sure if I was going to bring her into the prequel, as I couldn’t decide at what point I wanted her to meet Bren and Riz, as their relationship changed depending on what part of their lives they met. Thanks to fan feedback though (and one good friend taking Valarie to his heart and making the choice to include her much easier). Adding her in proved to be difficult with the pacing and raised a few questions about her purpose, this is one of the factors that led me to abandon that draft as it was, and start to rework it all.

One of the other benefits that came from doing this, meant I could find a beta reader who could give me feedback on the chapters as I wrote them, and help keep me on course. Luckily I found one within the fantastic writer Abi Pearson, the author of the Wayfarer’s Journey fantasy story (she also has her own website and blog here!) She’s been a firm supporter of my work and leapt on the chance. It’s also because of her that I did something that I always kept umming and erring about, taking Brennan to the Seely Council for a couple of chapters, shedding a bit of light on my version of the Fae.

Anyway, the new draft has given plenty of challenges to overcome, and I’ll go through them all after the book is published, but I’ll say that I greatly under-estimated the challenges of writing a prequel, in terms of keeping plot points straight, and realising that things I promised in earlier stories, have to be kept. This is has been one of the biggest headaches for me.

There’s been some work that I’ve had to delete just to keep the lines straight, and the time frame from the story has been stretched further then I would have liked because of something I wrote in the Yeti in the Snow story that just had to be explored here.

There’s revelations of course, to counter these difficulties, and yes, I do sort of set up Valarie’s solo novels, as it wouldn’t make sense for her to just blurt out everything that fully happened to her, she says what she needs to...then kicks ass.

Oh, one thing I should add, is that you do meet Brennan’s parents. Which made me ask myself how involved I wanted them being, not just as parents but as parts of the greater plot, again, there was plot points from previous stories that forced my hands here, but not in completely bad ways. I found a compromise that works for me as the author, and it opens up further doors to explore in later stories, should I wish to go down that way.

As it stands, the current chapter is solely about Merrick and Brennan, and them coming to terms with their friendship as it stands, meaning this is very character driven. I’ve never really written anything like that before. Which ties into what I first said about writing slow...

As we’ve come full circle, I’ll leave you with this teaser from A Boy and A Rat, and I’ll wish you all a fantastic Day, so until next time, Farewell.

The Strange Tales of Brennan and Riz: The Lost Voices

Happy Blog Day Everyone!

This week, I wanted to end the Brennan and Riz celebration with a bit more in depth talk on the things that didn’t make the cut in the first few stories. Like the character that was cruelly cut from Girl in the Water due to word restrictions, to a bit more on the eight characters removed wholesale from Goblins in the Tunnel.

The Strange Tales of Brennan and Riz: The Lost Voices

So last time I spoke about how Brennan and Riz had their start in a Sci-Fi world before being reborn as the duo you all know and love. This time, I thought I would discuss the parts that don’t make the stories, that for whatever reason, don’t make the cut.
When writing to a word limit, you get used to the fact that the first draft will rarely be what you ultimately hand in. Sometimes you can skimp past by just cutting extra descriptive words, but sometimes you have to be a bit more drastic and say goodbye to characters.

In the case of Girl in the Water, I had to say goodbye to a character called Mari, who would have been the third partner in Brennan’s little gang. This was before I brought Valarie back of course, who would go on to take that position.
Here is the only part of the story that still exists that features her presence. The following extract would have taken place just after Brennan’s first encounter with the Water Ghoul.
--
The phone was still ringing. I knew Mira didn’t like answering her phone the first time but I never realised how long she left it till now.
“Yo, you’ve reached Mira, not giving you a last name don’t bother if”
“Mira, it’s me, Brennan.” I interrupted her rehearsed script, it normally lasted an hour.
“Bren, long time no speak...How’s all that stuff I lent you?”
“Not calling about any of that, I need information.” I hear the sound of muffled laughter before Mira returns, composed.
“You want info...from me? I don’t want another I.O.U to add to my collection.”
“I’m on a good job at the moment..”
--
Of course, the plan was to have Mira go through the records for Brennan, and deliver him the information that he finds on his own in the actual story. She did go through a couple of revisions, as I tried to work out how I wanted her, but ultimately, she had to go to fix the story flow, and free up words that were needed elsewhere.
Her place in the group was taken by Valarie, and a little bit by the a new character that gets her proper introduction in the prequel (hint, she’s the woman who Brennan and Riz are terrified of and who they are in great debt to).

In a twist though, I have revived her, as Mari, Valarie’s London based best friend. So she went from being associated to Brennan, to being besties to Valarie, creating a very strong partnership, that will get fully explored in Valarie’s own stories.
Now, moving on to an even bigger change in the name of word count, let’s look at Goblins in the Tunnel.

Originally, the casting looked like this:
--
Characters
Brennan
Riz
Valarie
Mark West
Tobias Fern
Shawn Knots
Harry Knight
--
This is the first form the cast list took, Mark West would have been a business owner who’s basement linked into the tunnels, so he was looking to turn them into something he could profit from. Tobias was the surveyor he’d hired to accomplish this goal (but that’s not all, as I’ll explain in a moment). Shawn and Harry, were thieves who had come down to the tunnels to see what they could steal, though given that’s what Brennan and Riz were there to do in a sense, that’s why they were quickly swapped out.

Here follows a more detailed cast list that also expands on who the characters are. This is something I do when planning, mostly with small stories where getting the most for the least words is often crucial.
--
Mr Clint Harding – Owner of a local business, looking to capitalise on the tunnels under his existing business. He’s showing the tunnels to an investor.

Mr Earnest Beckett- A rich investor wanting to put money into Clint’s business venture, or at least that’s what he’s claiming but really wants access to the cult chamber that had been sealed when the Castle was torn down. Is killed by Red Caps that have been hibernating since then. A member of Umbral.

Leo Smith- 19 years old, bartender of the North Eastern Pub. Ends up following Brennan into the tunnels with Katlin, Connor and Sara.

Katlin Rhodes- 18 years old, Leo’s crush, goes down into the tunnels along with her friends.

Connor Edwards- 19 years old, Leo’s best friend and person who dares him down into the tunnels.

Sara Macy- 19 years old, Connor’s girlfriend and the person who eggs them all on into the tunnels, following her boyfriends lead.
--
I changed the names of all the secondary characters, as you can see. Instead of the thieves, I added four teenagers who had wandered into the tunnels to prove their bravery. Interestingly, only one of them would make it into the published story, and that would be Leo, who leads Brennan and Riz into the basement, and leaves them there. Also Earnest Beckett, member of Umbral.

When I first conceived the story, Umbral was going to be an over-arcing threat that Brennan and Co would tumble with time and time again. Sort of like any good super villain league or Spectre in the James Bond franchise. This came with problems though. It felt that any time I would want to include these guys that I would have to have some laboured way of reminding readers of who they were if they were reading the stories out of order.

The more time I gave to sort this issue, the more it fell apart, so ultimately, the concept was abandoned, but if someone you had been following the character chaos hashtag on twitter a few months ago, you might have heard Valarie talking about Umbral.
I did what all great writers do and took something that I had left at the wayside, dusted it down, and gave it new life. In this case, Umbral went from being a cult to something much nastier.

There is a short piece of the story that features these characters, minus Earnest and Clint, and it marks the first time that the large group encounters the Red Caps.
--
“Bren...Wat’s dat noise?” Riz’s whiskers twitched nervously as the rumbling reached fever pitch. Using the Runes again, my hearing was so focused, I heard the rumbling for what it really was. A stampede of armoured little feet. I turned back to the now large group and uttered one word.
“Run!” I grabbed Riz by the scruff of his neck and ran away from the noise. The rest soon followed.
A second later and it became apparent that the horde of, whatever, was gaining on us as over the rumble of feet, we could now hear voices. Angry voices, ones calling for our blood.
As I was running ahead of the others, I trusted Riz to let me know if anything happened to those behind me. This allowed him to see what was following us.
“Ah shit...Red Caps” My thoughts echoed what he’d said. Shit. I still didn’t look back, and I’d hoped the others hadn’t either. They had. The teenagers were the ones who went the craziest.
“What are those things?”
“Don’t let them touch me!”
“Shit! Shit! Shit!”
“Go! Go!” I head a thud...
--
In true horror movie fashion, some of the teenagers would have been picked off, one by one, leaving two alive. Again though, problems arose, ones that threatened the whole structure of the story. I detailed these problems in one of my earlier blog posts, explaining why I cut the teenagers. I think this was to the benefit of the story, allowing it to run faster, and making the action more claustrophobic.

Well that’s all we have time for this week, so I hoped you enjoyed this little look at the deleted parts of the published stories. I was finding my feet with these first two stories of Brennan and Riz, as such they were the ones with the most edits.

Join me next week, but till then, keep writing.

The Strange Tales of Brennan and…Zivo?

The Sci-Fi Origins of Brennan and Riz Revealed

So as I said up there, I’m counting today as the date for  Brennan and Riz’s two year anniversary, or more to the point, two years since the date I started writing “The Girl in the Water”, my entry in the Crossing the Tees 2017 Short Story Competition.

However, they didn’t really, spontaneously burst into existence then…No they’ve been rattling in my head for longer then that. In fact, Brennan himself, had made a home for himself in my brain for at least nine-ten years already, except then, his last name was Torres, and he lived amongst the stars…

Let’s go back to the beginning.

I was wanting to write something new, still wanting to experiment with different genres. One that always stood out to me was Science Fiction. I’m a great lover of Sci-Fi, from Star Wars to Star Trek, to shows like Babylon 5 to oddities that no one really remembers anymore like Space Precinct.
So turning my mind to it, I had a great deal of thinking to do, Sci-Fi, as a genre, encompasses a great range of stories, from the humorous, to the serious, to those that are earth bound, to those that visit the end of the universe and back again. What I wanted though, was fun characters that I would enjoy writing (something that I no doubt share with other writers), so for a fun exercise, I set out creating the main character first.

I wanted them to be different from the characters I had been working on for the past so many years, at the time, this was Cypher and Serena from my Daemon Soul series. So I wanted to skew older, how old? Well I wanted him to have seen everything and be world weary, and to have the worst luck in history. This was how Brennan Torres was born. A human that resided on the place known as Nexus, an artificial world. He lived on the bottom most levels of the planet, sharing his space with other disposed beings. He ran his own business, a Private Detective agency, and was constantly in debt to forces greater then himself. Some of that will sound familiar, but there was a lot more that marked this Brennan as different.

The main difference was that this Brennan bore the marks of past mistakes in the form of a drug I’d called Techno-Stigmata, because of the visible signs that appeared when you used it, neon green lines like circuitry. This drug was created as a means of achieving complete unity with technology, one of humankinds last achievements. Oh did I mention that this Brennan was over a thousand years old? Yeah that was important.

So there’s a lot of elements there that you’d recognize but back then, it still didn’t feel enough. I gave him a love of nostalgia, for human made artifacts and technology (despite humanity being forbidden to toy with technology anymore, a punishment from the higher alien races for the dangerous spread of Techno Stigmata), he also has no luck whatsoever with women.

The character was set, and the world he belonged to was gradually taking shape, but no one is an island, and Brennan was no exception. This led to me thinking of supporting cast, and more importantly, the counter balance to Brennan. Going through his personality, it became apparent that he need someone, a partner.

This partner would be one who he could exchange barbs with, someone, who could hold their own but meant that the partnership was worth more together then they were separate. This led to…Valarie. What? You were expecting someone else?

Valarie was easy to figure out, I’d always wanted to do a character that was a journalist of sorts, and the opportunity to combine that with a very independent woman, who could hold her own against everyone and knew what she wanted was too good to pass up. I pictured her as someone who valued the truth above all else. She’s always was easy to write for, and that’s something that hasn’t changed.

In the beginning she was going to be the offset for Brennan till something changed, after spending a lot of time with her, I discovered that she really needed her own stories, her own adventures, especially before I did the main stories that I planned. It was at this point I decided that before I would do the novels, I would focus on short stories, to get readers used to the world, and , more importantly, give readers the chance to fall in love with the characters. However, if Valarie would be headlining her own stories, who would be working with Brennan?

Time for another new character to enter the fray, someone of a lot smaller stature, and who had a very heavy personality. This was where Riz-I mean, this is where Zivo came from.

Zivo follows in a lot of well worn footsteps, Bender from Futurama, Kryten from Red Dwarf, Marvin the Paranoid Android from Douglas Adams Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and a whole host of others from books and video games to boot. He was a scanner droid that Brennan rescued from a scrapheap. Zivo had was self aware and was the definition of cynicism. This little mouse shaped droid (another comparison you can draw to who Zivo would become). He was an even better character to place with Brennan then Valarie, allowing me to touch up on subjects like artificial intelligence and the nature of friendship and treating others equally. Though ostensibly, none of these themes are new to Sci-Fi, I was going to try and leave my mark with the way they interacted, and through the style of story I was going to tell.

The characters were in place, so it was time to write, and this is as far as I got. Without further ado, this is the first few pages of the first draft of The Theft of the Stars.

Chapter 1

As fire scorched away his heat resistant coat layer by layer, Brennan Torres found time to reflect on his current situation. He looked over to his right to see the little mouse like robot Zivo causally hiding behind some neo titanium crates, probably checking his social media. Brennan's eyes rolled.

First mistake, accepting this job. He thought as he held his back against the wall, trying to avoid being burned alive, a problem his robotic cohort didn't have. Wait, no my first mistake, was getting into debt with Elessa and her cronies. Second mistake was accepting this job. The flames stopped suddenly and Brennan started counting, and once he got to five, the fire shot out again as an inferno filled the corridor he wanted to be down.

Why did that lady have to involve me in this mess...Elessa is already enough trouble to deal with, then add Valerie into this mess...At this point Brennan let out a small laugh. All his troubles, they all had women at their root causes. If Zivo was a girl then it would of just made perfect sense. Actually though, as much as Brennan was in danger, he didn't want to be sorted just yet.

'They're all waiting for me after this aren't they...' Zivo was aroused from his idle mode by Brennan's voice.
'You know incineration will be a much cleaner death for you' The little robot carelessly moved his optics towards the fire then back to Brennan.  'As you earthlings say you're dammed if you do and dammed if you don't'
'Thanks Zivo, thanks' Brennan started counting again as the fire stopped but his mind couldn't help but think back to how this job started...

************************************

Fifty Two Hours Earlier

Brennan swept his desk clean for what felt like the hundredth time. He hadn't had a job for a couple of weeks and he was down to his last few carbon credits. Worse still he knew his debt collector would be round soon, calling for more then he had left.
Adding insult to injury, the Scherzi that  Brennan shared his building with were going through another religious holiday. Most people would call their harmonious singing a thing of beauty but Brennan was not most people.

To him it was annoying and it was grinding away his last nerves.
Zivo was being no help, the robot was hiding in the space between the walls, getting zapped up from the pure energy that was leaking from the conduits.
'I hope you get burnt out you little rusted rodent!' A knock on the door interrupted any worse obscenities. Brennan's eyes locked onto the shadow behind the door. It was humanoid and he could only see one person. This was good as it ruled out Elessa and her brutes, since they never travelled alone.

'Who is it?' He said wearily. Under his desk though he crossed his fingers, praying to all the infinite deities that civilisations had made for eons, even the outlandish ones, that whoever it was, they were a paying customer.

The door opened and a naked human strode through, a metal hood obscuring his head. There was a big hint that it was a him which Brennan quickly forced his view away from.
'For tecks sake' He cursed under his breath as he glanced back to the metal hood. 'A courier. A human courier'

This revelation put a huge damper on him. Couriers in this day ad age were robots who had gotten into trouble along the way and as payback,  lost their body. Their consciousness stored on a solid drive somewhere. The now lifeless body was turned into a walking  delivery service. Human couriers were a rarity but on the rise, especially with powerful beings who had dealings with humans and near humans. They were a powerful symbol of what might happen if you weren't lucky.
'Can I help you?' Brennan still didn't know where to put his eyes,  and really he didn't want the message but couriers could not be persuaded and their destruction was classed as destroying private property.
A red optic appeared from the metal hood and scanned Brennan, confirming he was the intended recipient. Once checked, a slot opened and a stream of green liquid poured out but took the shape of a human, a curvy female figure with hair covering one side of her face and wearing clothes normally reserved for those who knew how to wield power.

'Brennan Torres...You're going to make me lose my nice girl image'  It was Elessa, the woman who Brennan owed four platinum credits to, a wealth that would take him years to amass at his current rate of income.

'You never had an image like that' Brennan muttered, waiting for the real reason for the message to come out.
'I heard that...' Elessa smiled,  she loved catching people out like that.
'A two way video message, the tech is improving on these couriers. Shame it can't do anything about the colour of the message' Brennan didn't know why he said that. There was always a part of him deep down that strove to piss off the wrong people at the precise wrong moment.
'No one likes a smartass Brennan. Especially one who has had so many chances to get back into a groove with repayments.  One who has almost spent all the patience I give them, oh and one who faces extra late fees' It sounded like Elessa was being jovial but there was a strong layer of menace in her words, enough to send chills down people's asked.

 'Look,  business has been...'
'Slow? Sluggish? Dead...' Elessa dragged out the pronouication of that last word. 'I'm not surprised though, especially if you turn down decent paying jobs like the ones I sent you last week' Elessa wasn't looking at Brennan at this point, she was just playing with her hair,  was there a reason why you turned down those jobs I sent your way?'
'You mean the jobs where they wanted me to kill the only decent politician in the galaxy or the one where I was supposed to put pressure on a guy who owned a asteroid, to make sure he sold it to a nice illegal operation instead a foundation wanting to set up a new hospital free for everyone?'

'A job is a job isn't it? Or have you beggars finally unionised?' Elessa changed her pose, putting her hands on her hips, her smile sending threats directly to Brennan.
'Now, how many chances have I given you, chances you swore you would repay'
'As many as you generously gave me, and I still will repay that gratitude'
'Oh yes you will, as I, with the patience of  every godly figure out there, have reached the limit. A point where most other lenders would of been using your grave as an example of how not to do business'

'How ever you're different, as you give people one more chance just because you're definitely the most beautiful crime boss out there.. ' Brennan knew flattery was a long shot but if Elessa had decided that a clients time was up, well, they would be a small print obituary in the next data sheet.
'We don't use that earth term now, "crime boss", personally I prefer lady president executor...' Elessa said proudly.

'How universally correct of you,  I didn't realise that earth language was getting censored now'
'Censored?  Don't be silly, there's better words out there if you're willing to adapt. Though don't think you can change the subject'
'Change the subject? Not me,  miss "l.p.e" I just thought we were having an interesting conversation'

'Well let's end this "interesting conversation" then. You've got two choices." Elessa held up two fingers to illustrate her point. . ‘First, you can pay me back in full, or, Second, you can pay me back in full, in person..." Her hand closed into a fist as her smile became downright demonic.
'Those don't sound like choices' Brennan mumbled as he started fumbling around under the desk for his emergency transport fund.

‘Want me to chose for you? Its been a couple of days since I’ve been out’ The liquid Elessa suddenly turned back into a swirling vortex as the courier sucked it back in. The naked being stood there for a moment then promptly turned and left. Brennan stood silently for a few minutes,  contemplating his few remaining options.
‘Problems fleshy?’ Zivo emerged from his private time hidey hole. ‘I heard a woman’s voice and thought to myself that you can’t of found a date, so I wanted to hear how much this one was going to charge you’
‘Four platinum credits’ Brennan started counting the emergency transport fund, scrolling through all the I.O.Us he had left himself. ‘Need to get far enough away from this galaxy as possible...’
‘Four plats? My you really have expensive tastes’
‘Zivo , you know full well who that was and how much trouble we’re in’ Brennan threw the pile of I.O.Us against the wall.

‘Firstly fleshy, I can’t even begin to pretend to care about how many female species you make yourself known to. Second, why am I involved?  Unless you have dragged me into some sordid affair’ Zivo loved taking the moral high ground at times like this, and in another place and time when they weren’t on the verge of being hunted down, Brennan would of just retorted with Zivo’s love of kitchen appliances, toasters especially.
‘Zivo’ Brennan kept his serious tone which the robot’s sensors immediately picked up on ‘That was a message from Elessa, time’s up’ The name went straight through Zivo taking less than any measurable amount of time to go through the matrices that comprised his mind.

‘...I’m calculating 225 possible escape routes, of which 113 are most likely to evade her detection for up to ten years’ The change in Zivo’s behaviour never ceased to amaze but sadly, Brennan had further bad news for the little drone.
‘We also only have twenty carbon credits to help us’
‘Updating response...0 possible escape routes as money is crucial. Back up plan, I’m going to crawl in the darkest and bottom most corner of Nexus Prime and cower’
‘Why expect any less...’ Brennan circled his desk, like vultures circling prey except he knew he was the prey. It was at this point that Zivo’s proximity sensors went off. Someone else was in the building and on there way to the office.

‘Brennan! Someone is here!’ Zivo turned to the door but continued to back towards his hidey hole. As for Brennan, he just braced himself for whatever was about to happen. The door opened dramatically, and a female alien stood there, an air of dignity flowed around her presence lit up to dreary little room. Her clothes were radiant and shone like all the nebula in the cosmos.  She was lithe with long proportions,  her head slightly elongated with elegant features and deep silver eyes surrounded by a pool of black. White hair trailed around her neck and down her back, hiding all but small traces of two bony protrusions which were vestigial traces of wings. Both Brennan and Zivo  did a double take. Brennan wondered if his brain had snapped under all the stress, while his little drone companion checked his programming repeatedly to see if he had been hacked and suffering a cruel simulation.

‘Mr Torres I presume’ Her voice matched her appearance, dignified and refined in pitch and tone, though her english sounded unnatural with the pronunciations falling in the wrong places.
‘Yes...?’ Brennan wasn't sure on how to deal with this, only two types of people came to him,  and only one of them  wanted to be his customer.  This visitor didn't match any of his previous clientele.

‘My name is Fae Drell Sapphire,  or at least what my name is in your Earthen tongue" Fae moved her hands when she spoke, as if each syllable had its own gesture.
‘You're a spryte then. ..’ Sprytes were a race of beings that were renowned for beauty and their culture,  hiding the dark part of their history of abductions and experimentations on numerous species,  most of which were extinct. Brennan had little dealings with them in the past, they never ventured out of their glistening towers. Faes face contorted a little on hearing what he’d said , that species name was considered a butchering of their preferred name, that sadly was unpronounceable using an Earthen tongue.

‘Is that going to be a problem?’ She asked as her composure restored itself.
 ‘No...Of course not...’
‘Unless you wish to perform a autopsy this fleshy and examine my internal components’ Zivo said, as he quickly hid behind his human shield. Again, Fae’s face contorted with a look somewhere in between shame and disgust.
‘We as a species no longer do anything of the sort, besides metal rodent’ She narrowed her gaze at Zivo. ‘There is nothing anyone can learn from an out dated drone such as yourself’ Her pleasant face returned after she was finished scolding him.

‘Please don’t insult my staff, especially not my scanner’ Brennan gave Fae a discontented look of his own. Faes chuckled, like a parent watching a child mimicking them with little success.
‘Please forgive me, I can’t let talk like that tarnish our pride but I’ll be sure to play nicer with you little friend’
‘Okay let’s cut to the chase now’ Brennan said. ‘Why me?’
‘This matter is personal and I need someone like you’ Fae looked around and then back at Zivo.

‘When you say that...What do you mean?’
‘Desperate’ Fae smiled ‘Your name is passed around a lot when I talk to Elessa, something about your debt which keeps increasing towards an infinite point’
‘Oh so that’s what you mean...’ Brennan sighed, no matter what, Fae had him cornered.

‘Guess you are up that creek without the paddle. Or however you say that pointless expression of yours’ Zivo  piped up.
‘If you said it properly then yeah I’d agree with you but  that’s not the point right now’ Brennan closed his eyes and counted to ten. He knew he was going to regret what he was going to say. ‘Okay then, what’s the job...?’ Delighted, Fae began to tell them her tale.

Chapter 2

Fifty hours in the past...

Brennan carefully and slowly made his way through the maintenance corridor though he thought calling it a corridor was too nice a description. It was a rotting mess, the biological wires that used to carry energy had long since burst and left remnants still slowly dissolving. The smell was something he always imagined a bog smelling like, Brennan envied Zivo‘s lack of a smelling function.

‘How much further?’
‘Not long, by your preferred measuring unit it’s just over two hundred meters away’ Zivo replied while scrambling over the mess that was the floor.
‘That all? It’s closer then I remembered’ Brennan looked.
‘Pray tell fleshy, when was the last time you were down here? ‘
‘About five years ago, it was when I first came to this planet’
-
The way the story pans out, you can see there was a lot I took over to Brennan and Riz. The use of First Person Perspective, starting the adventure in the middle of the action then going back, the noir trappings. Everything seemed to be working well but I started getting bogged down in research and the constant question of how much I should be explaining compared to how much I should be let revealed through dialogue and actions. This and other time commitments meant the end of the Sci-Fi quest, but not the end of the characters, as through all this, I had fallen in love with Brennan, Valarie and Zivo, the little robot who could.

They didn’t languish very long as the Crossing the Tees 2017 short story contest made me revisit different ideas in the run up, due to needing a story that was centered the Tees river. Now the future set up was out of the question, I needed something much more contemporary.
Choosing to make this the home of Brennan and Co was a no brainer. I stripped him of his Sci-Fi details, and altered his age to mirror my own, by doing so I effectively turned him into a mirror of me, which was no bad thing. Instead, he became a 34 year old who was deep in debt and living out of his car. He was never afraid to do the right thing but his attempts to do so were always frustrated by his partner, the magical talking rat, Riz.

Transferring Zivo to a modern setting was much more difficult that I thought, as he couldn’t be a robot anymore. Going back to the drawing board, I took note of what shape Zivo was a mouse, so why not a Rat? To finish him off, I decided to homage a Muppet’s name, and Riz was born. I took Brennan’s Agelessness from the old Sci-Fi concept and give it to Riz, turning him into a Rat that had seen it all, and tried to be killed by it all. Valarie also emerged complete unhurt by the changes.

As I was able to transplant her personality and drive into her modern day version, though she wouldn’t debut till the second Brennan and Riz story, Goblins in the Tunnels.

So there you have it, is there more to Brennan and Riz? Of course, as this is only one side of how I created Girl in the Water, it doesn’t include the third member of Brennan’s little team who sadly never made the cut due to the word limit, we may just have to continue on with this next week. As far as the Sci-Fi story goes however, the project has gone dormant once again, it’s heart given to a successor in an earlier time stream, maybe one day I should set up a cross over of the two Brennan’s, would any one be remotely interested in that?

Till next time, remember folks, what doesn’t work today, may be the start of tomorrow best seller.

The Dragon of the Moon…Drache Arm Luna Part II

Last week, I spoke about the original ideas behind Drache Arm Luna, and the design document I created in late 2007/08 but of course the idea wasn’t to end there.
A few years later, or five, I came to revisit the idea, and look at where I left it and what I could do to change it so I was happy with it. The armour idea was the key component, but I had to get the story for it right.

So I began with the Clans, I wondered if my original idea of giving the Clans their own country, the alternative being setting them up as guilds in different countries, but that wasn’t satisfying. I went and looked at the middle ground. This was to shrink the size of the countries that the Clan’s governed (a way of trying to curtail their power. Imposed on them after the First Dragon War) and give them embassies in the Free Realms (I.E All the countries that weren’t ruled by Clans.). I then created more countries of different sizes and allegiances, noting how they interacted with the Clans. Some of them would have been friendly, enjoying trade and protection, while others would have been afraid of the power of the Drache Arms. Then I worked out if any of these countries would have been land that would have fallen under the control of the Clans in the distant past (using the world I created in the first place.) and looking at how that would affect things.

Sadly I never got far enough in the design to really give these places their own unique identity, along with any shared influences from the Clans. The Clans themselves remained unchanged over then the land they controlled. With the same ones being present. However, this wasn’t to be the case for long as I planned three stories. The first was just to feature the Clans, and be based on an idea I had for the first version of Drache Arm Luna, that of the Twilight Chasers. This would have seen a group built of representatives of the Clans hunting for the Drache Gotts. These beings were dragon gods named after Dawn, Dusk and Twilight. This is actually from an even older story idea, proving that you should keep all the ideas you have!

The second story though, would have seen new armours appearing, based off certain real animals like Wolves, Lions and Eagles. Joining them would have also been Insect based armour, namely Spider, Scorpion and Beetle. This would have caused an arms race of sorts as the world tries to gain balance between the different powered groups.

The last story however, would have been set further on in the time line and focused on the fight against a new power that had gained control of several countries using weapons I had dubbed, Alchemy Arms, that were based on concepts like Sword and Shield. These, unlike all the others mentioned before, were completely human made. They would have been equal in power to Drache Arms and the other ones. Taken together, the three stories would have told the story of the world, and would have contained overlapping themes and a thick tendril of darkness that ran through them. The last story in particular would have revolved around the last member of the Luna Clan, working to unite everyone.
No more work was done on this story series though.

Despite all these changes, I still never found the spark that I needed to get writing done on it. I found it hard to come up with an origin for the amulets that contained the Drache Arm, at least, an origin that people would have taken seriously. No matter which one I tried, questions poked holes in the material, and it fell apart. Sadly I shelved it, only returning to it at one point for Roleplay material, which didn’t help much.

Would I come back again to this idea? If I got inspiration I would, I still believe in the concept of the Drache Arms but it still needs something else, something that I lack at this point in time. I think it’s an important tool for a writer, to be able to recognize when an idea isn’t working, to shelve it for the future. No matter how involved we are in it.

So that’s it for Drache Arm Luna, but next week…Next week I’ll be doing something special as we dive into the Lost Writings once more. This time though, we’ll be looking at the origins of Brennan and…Zivo? Yes, in honor of Brennan and Riz’s third birthday, I’ll be going back to Brennan’s sci-fi beginnings and how he turned from that, into the protagonist everyone loves today (well those that read him), see you next time!
