#154 Riz-mas Guide + Short Diversions: Phantom Dawn Chapter 21

Happy Blog Day Everyone

Got a new chapter of Phantom Dawn for all your reading pleasures, and it'll all be over soon, though I have slightly missed the time it was supposed to end in. If I recall, my original plan called for it to have either ended now, or before the end of December. Might have been earlier come to think of it. It'll definitely have ended before the end of January...Maybe, never say never and all that!

In other news, work continues apace on my new Daemon Soul novella, hoping to have something to show you all soon regarding it.  Ideally, I'd have thought this up sooner but that's the writers luck I guess.

Let's see what mischief Riz is up too this Riz-mas season...

The Comic Tales of Brennan and Riz

Seems Riz has issued a guide for those still unsure of how to usher in a good Riz-mas. I fear though that his holiday isn't going to get much traction. Can't blame a rat for trying!

Short Diversions: Phantom Dawn Chapter 21

With two surprising new allies on her side, Rose enters the fray again, but is it enough to ensure victory? Or is she going to have to dig deeper than she even thought possible? Read on to find out!

Chapter 21

----------

Chapter 21: Berserker

Rose stood in the middle of the T-Rex and spider-like creatures, while their enemy, the humanoid shaped one, didn’t seem phased by the numbers against it. It started advancing towards this strange team, its pace quickening till it was flat out running, and with its speed, it was in their midst before they knew it. The T-rex creature charged in, using its head to charge the opposing monster, but the humanoid creature stood its ground, and lifted its opponent off the ground, throwing it to the side, just as the spider creature attacked, its large legs falling hard on the humanoid creature's shoulders. The attack landed but it was nowhere near enough to stop it. Instead, the humanoid creature lifted the spider’s arms out of its way, before attacking it with its tail that had quickly changed shape, resembling more of an axe head than before. The area became filled with the sound of the monsters crying out in pain as each one scored a hit on the other.
Unable to do anything, Rose kept calling out to the monsters on her side, telling them where there were openings in their enemies' defence. To her surprise, they actually listened to her, moving as instructed. Still, for every attack they landed, more was inflicted in return. This kind of fighting wasn’t sustainable, and Rose could see that. Sooner, rather than later, her allies would slow, and then, they would fall. It was only the fact that it was currently two versus one that they were doing the damage. Feeling her own self-worth lessen, she gripped the handle of her sword tightly. For the first time, she felt the damage that her fighting had caused the sword, as the handle was scratched where once it was smooth, the blade itself was now chipped in a couple of places, showing how hard the enemy’s defences were. If she were to swing again, there was no telling how long it’d last before the blade snapped. The T-rex creature cried out in pain as the tail from the humanoid one struck near its neck, drawing blood.
Gritting her teeth, Rose charged in, wanting to take her chances rather than standing there. The Spider creature blocked her path, stopping her from joining the fray as it grabbed the tail that was hurting its comrade and ripped it off, allowing the T-rex to stagger to the side, blood oozing out from the wound. It was able to stand again, baring its teeth at the humanoid creature, yet the threat was no longer there.
The three creatures clashed again in combat, leaving Rose watching, her confidence plummeting. She slid to her knees, tears in her eyes. She didn’t understand what had happened to her strength, to what happened to all those incredible feats she had been able to pull off before.
“Do you really want to be able to fight like that again? Is your helplessness causing you that much pain and suffering? Isn’t this delightful!” the other voice in her head laughed.
“Shut up!” Rose screamed, she pushed herself up again as the humanoid creature knocked the two others aside, slick blood forming an arc in the air as it slashed both of them.
The humanoid creature seemed to ponder which target it was going to go for, to deliver the killing blow. It settled on the already weakened T-rex beast. Despite having no mouth or any other facial features other than an eye, its demeanour gave the impression that it was certainly relishing the carnage it was causing. The Spider creature tried to stand up, but found it hadn’t the strength.
Rose couldn’t look at the scene in front of her. The two monsters didn’t have to fight for her, and they didn’t have to die for her either. To that end, she started running at the humanoid creature, this time the other creatures couldn’t get in the way, but she was determined to get in the way of them. She struck out with the sword, but the humanoid creature was ready, and choosing its moment wisely, it knocked the sword out of Rose’s hand with a swipe of its tail before it punched Rose into the ground, making a crater that only got bigger as it kept punching her down. It then loomed over her, its tail poised to strike into her, ending the fight once and for all.
“I guess, I’ll have to step in after all, aren’t you incredibly lucky that I need you alive?” The voice in her head stated, allowing itself a sly chuckle at the end. Rose blacked out at this point, those words being the last thing she heard.

Kurz and Mason watched what happened next in complete shock and horror. They too had thought it was all over as Rose fell to the ground, but what they weren’t expecting was her hand to shoot up at the last second, grabbing the head of the tail before it could do anything. She held it in place as the humanoid creature struggled to get free. Still holding on, Rose stood up. It was now that they could see her face, or the lack of it as it were. They didn’t know where the mask had come from, but there was a plain white one that completely covered her face without any visible slits for eyes or mouth. Her movements looked awkward, her head tilting erratically. Bands of crimson coloured energy started gathering at her wrists, spinning around them till they resembled barb wire at first, till threads shot out, becoming more chain-like. The ends of each chain culminated in jagged hooks and other cruel implements. Rose finally let go of the tail, and the humanoid creature hopped back a fair ways, wanting to put some space between them. It was at this point a red x formed across the mask, some of the colour dripping down like blood. With parts of her long hair sticking up in a jagged style, Rose started to move, dragging the energy chains with her. The movements of her body were unnerving to look at, as she jerked at random intervals.

The humanoid creature didn’t want to let her get too close to him, not with the weapons she’d crafted for herself. Its body shifted slightly, as though it was trying to gain an advantage over Rose, and it attacked with its tail again, this time having been lengthened so it didn’t have to go near her. She did nothing to try and evade the attack, instead, she wrapped it up with the set of chains from around her left arm, and then dragged the creature forward, straight into her own attack with the chains from around her other arm, the hooks tearing large chunks of rock away from the creature exposing more of its skin which started causing it to panic. The humanoid creature even sacrificed its tail to get away from the direct confrontation, once again escaping to where it thought Rose wouldn’t be able to attack it. This proved a fatal error as, tossing the tail aside, Rose whipped both sets of chains around with no care as to what was in their radius, and then sent them out after the humanoid creature, the chains magically growing longer when they needed to. They descended on the creature like a rain of blades, gouging and slashing with every flick of Rose’s wrist. The creature tried to escape but the hooks dug too deep within its rock-like skin and it was dragged towards Rose with barely any defence left. With the tables turned against it so decidedly, the creature tried one last defiant act, it took the last of the rock-like skin, and turned it into a spear, one that it launched at Rose point blank. A normal person would have been skewered, but not Rose, instead she caught it an inch from her face with her bare hand, it’s sharp edges cutting her hand open but she didn’t flinch from it, instead she commanded every hook to impale itself into the creature's body, each one sticking in deep. Once that was done, she cocked her head as the creature stared at her, now terrified about what was going to happen. Rose clicked her fingers and every chain was pulled away, ripping the creature into shreds. Underneath the almost magma like surface, the creature bled profusely as it lay there dying, whatever power had animated, had straight up deserted it now. Rose wasn’t finished yet though, she identified the biggest part of it, and then started attacking over and over again. There was no mercy to be had here.

Watching this horrifying scene, Kurz and Mason sat in complete silence, both turning pale at the carnage they were seeing. They watched as the humanoid creature gave its last breath as it crumbled into dust, and Rose started to head towards them, spinning both sets of chains around.
“Wait! Rose! It’s us!” Kurz shouted. “You’ve done it! You’ve won!”
“I don’t think she can hear us!” Mason said. He’d recovered enough to move slightly but, neither of them were going very far.
“ROSE! WAKE UP!” Kurz shouted once more, putting everything he had into it. Still, Rose sped up, her orderly pace breaking down into a spring, the chains bouncing along behind her.
Seeing as there was no other option, Mason joined with Kurz in shouting Rose’s name, hoping to break through whatever madness she was currently in.
“ROSE! DON’T LET YOUR ANGELIC GRACE BE CORRUPTED LIKE THIS!”
If Mason had uttered that at any other point, Kurz would have said something to him, but with their lives on the line, he merely made a note of it, a fun piece of trivia he could use against him if they were to walk away from here alive.
“ROSE! PLEASE, WE’RE YOUR FRIENDS! YOU HAVE TO WAKE UP!” Kurz pleaded, as she came frightfully close to them, to the point where they could see droplets of blood falling from the mask like tears.
It was at the last possible second that the mask started to crack, and swiftly, broke apart, the fragments dissolving before they could even hit the ground. The chains similarly dissipated and Rose collapsed to the ground, her face frozen in shock, as if she herself could scarcely believe what happened.

Everything became still again, as it sunk in to Kurz and Mason that they had survived, yet that’s all they felt had happened. Kurz looked over to where their enemy had been mere minutes ago, and there was nothing. It had died swiftly and quietly in retrospect, it’s death overshadowed by the transformation that Rose underwent.

If anything, the battle had only given them more questions, but at they very least, they had another day to wake up to in order to seek answers.

Next Chapter (not finished yet!)

That's all for this week, by all rights next weeks should be fairly brief, but I've got a feeling there may be something to look at...hopefully!

Till then...

Keep on writing.

#153 Riz-mas Surprise

Happy Blog Day Everyone

Today is a quick one, as is always the case between two chapters of Phantom Dawn. I do have some good news to share though, following my woes about writing last week.

That news? I've actually started a new draft for a story. I think I'm doing what's called a skeleton draft with this one (correct me if I'm wrong) in that I'm writing short un-descriptive paragraphs that outline what I want from each chapter. Doing this, I've been able to complete an outline that can be filled in when I actually start writing it properly. I'm approaching this story differently from others as there's essentially two threads wrapped around each other, being told alternatively. At the moment, I'm using the term Interlude a (followed by Interlude b etc etc) to differentiate it from the more prominent storyline. I've yet to properly work on it but then again, I've got Phantom Dawn craving my attention.

Hopefully I can get meat on those bones soon.

Let's see how our favourite duo are getting on...

The Comic Tales of Brennan and Riz

Riz-mas chaos has begun! Some good things with this one, though I do think I should have gone with one of my earlier ideas rather than what I did draw. Still, got another two Riz-mas strips to go, with the last one dropping on Christmas Eve.

I'm sure I can have some fun with that one!

That's all for this week.

Next time we'll have chapter 21 of Phantom Dawn which may be the penultimate chapter (not counting epilogue) but it also may not? All depends what I write and if it works. We are close to the end, and I'll probably say it several times, but thank you to everyone who has spared the time to read it. I know it hasn't been the most consistent quality of releases.

Till next time...

Keep on writing

#152 After the Party + Short Diversions: Phantom Dawn Chapter 20

Happy Blog Day Everyone

Chapter 20 of Phantom Dawn is here, and with it, a new twist in Rose's fight.

Not much else has been happening, but I've been deep in thought about other things relating to the stories, just need the energy to actually get things done.

I do miss writing, which seems like an odd thing to say since I'm still writing, hence the new chapter today. However, what I mean is writing without a deadline looming overhead (again, I know it's another odd thing to say when I'm the one setting these deadlines but that's the joy of being me, my mind likes to torment me).

In theory this is just starting the word processor up, choosing something, and writing away without worrying that I should be working on the thing that's needed fairly quickly (as has been the case with these Phantom Dawn chapters). A lot of this is clearly on me and my abysmal time keeping, along with other hobbies gobbling up all my spare moments.

It's not like I haven't got things to work on either, like Daemon Soul 2, the Avalon Tales spin off, another spin off (the first chapter of which may be coming sooner than you think), other story ideas (like the medieval mecha one I spoke about a few weeks ago). That's also not including any Brennan and Riz stories! So yeah, a lot I could be doing but when push comes to shove, there's always something that I should be working on instead.

Enough of all that though, I hear the party has finally stopped over with our favourite duo...

The Comic Tales of Brennan and Riz

The wonkiness of the first panel aside, there's some good work here, between that close up of Riz and Brennan’s expression. I don't normally transition from one storyline to another in the same strip, but since it's Riz-mas, I'm going to make an exception. What do I have planned you may ask? No idea really, like Brennan and Riz often do, I'm going to wing it in spectacular style. Will this last the whole month of December or end on Christmas Eve? I've got no idea.

Hope you stick with me through all of Riz’s incoming craziness!

Chapter 20: Struggle

In her focused state, Rose went to meet the creature head on, intent on making sure that it never passed the imagined boundary that led to Kurz and Mason, and beyond them, to the town. The creature was more than happy to meet her in the middle, moving to punch her with its right fist, which seemed to swell up the moment before impact. Rose threw herself backwards to avoid it, landing like a cat, and propelled herself forward, catching the creature by surprise with her own punch that caused its rocky surface to crack. The blow forced the creature back a little bit, but by nowhere near the amount her kick had done before, which meant the creature was back into the swing of things quickly, attacking again with frenzied blows. Rose weaved through them, before taking every opening she could to inflict more damage to the beast, her punches now tearing chunks of rocky material off, exposing the molten magma like substance underneath that was still glowing a brilliant white.

From their un-enviable vantage point, Kurz and Mason could feel the heat extruding from the creature, noting how Rose acted like she wasn’t affected by it at all. Still, they could only watch, their bodies having given up any pretense that they could actually move, or even be any help whatsoever. Really, they should have been trying to move away, but that wasn’t an option either. The question that hovered over both of their minds was a simple one, would she be strong enough to overpower this creature like the others. They knew that she had to in order to save all their lives, but the flip side did poke its head through their beliefs. They didn’t verbalise it, lest they invoke it into fruition. For Mason’s part, while it lingered in his mind his faith in Rose was absolute, and he’d rather see himself fall before her if it was to make a difference. She’d trusted in him, so it was all he could think of doing in return. Kurz was more conflicted. He’d seen what she could do, and assumed that while there was probably a limit, they hadn’t seen it yet. What troubled him was when she’d hit that limit, and if that would be enough. In the short time he’d known her, he’d spent half of it either ignoring her, or distrusting her. Yet now, he was depending on her to save not only him, but everyone else. This left him to struggle with his feelings and actions, and his inability to do anything.

Rose was completely oblivious to what they were thinking, every ounce of her being was devoted to stopping the monster before her, but she found her own options being limited by the effect they were having on her enemy. Yes, she seemed to be doing damage, but it wasn’t slowing the creature down any. Instead, its movements were slowly changing, the openings it was leaving for Rose to dodge into, were getting smaller. The monster slammed it’s fist into the ground, causing it to become unstable, and throwing Rose off the rhythm she’d created for herself, then it lurched forward, landing its first blow against her, knocking her as far back as her first kick had against it. She recovered quickly, and narrowly avoided another strike that would have taken the head of anyone else. Countering, she leapt up, and kicked the creature in the neck, a move which caused it to stagger. There was more and more of the molten skin showing now, the result of every attack she’d made.

The creature, though, seemed to notice its own predicament, and roared in outrage, its cry echoing throughout the land, terrifying though in the town who heard it. All the stony skin pieces fell off, as the molten skin changed shape, shrinking down till it was more at Rose’s height instead of the hulking monstrosity it was before. There were jagged peaks sticking out of its back and out of its shoulders, and a singular red eye opened on what passed for its head. Its jaw hinged wide and it let out another roar. Rose prepared herself, undeterred by the metamorphosis before her. She charged in, but the creature’s speed was now even greater than before, and it evaded every move she was making, almost copying her own style. Whereas before, she could land blows on it, this time, all she was hitting was air.

Kurz spat out in frustration. From where he and Mason were laid out, it looked like Rose was fighting a mirror copy of herself as far as movements were going.

“What- What is that thing? I knew there were monsters out there but nothing like this!” Mason stuttered

“Everything before…All those others…and we thought they were the worse things…Or are there even more terrible things out there,” Kurz spoke quietly, so quiet he wasn’t aware that he’d made any sound.

“Come on, Rose! My angel! Show us the hope we’ve put in you!” Mason yelled, in contrast.

If Kurz could, he would have given him the side eye, but as it was, there was nothing else to do, but watch and pray.

Rose had tried mixing up her attacks, going from punching, to kicks and even an attempted shoulder barge, but none of them found their mark.

The creature then started its own attacks, and found no issue striking her with its full force. Every attack hit with the force of an explosion, and Rose was knocked back, crashing into the floor. She got back up after each one, but every time, it took that little bit longer.

Running back towards the creature, Rose swung the sword with everything she could muster, and in turn the creature pulled back its right fist and they both struck at the same time, the impact causing a mini shockwave. The end result of this was that Rose was sent flying backwards again, smashing through several rocky outcrops, dropping the sword in the process.

Both Kurz and Mason felt their heart in their throats as they watched her roll to a stop.

For what seemed like the longest time, she laid there, not moving. The creature moved slowly towards her, its head tilting as its curiosity grew.

Rose grasped for breath, pain flaring in every part of her body. It took her several moments to realise that she had complete control again. She took a step forward, and had to catch her breath as she collapsed down to one knee.

What’s going on? She thought. Forcing herself back upright, she tried to settle her breathing, as her enemy advanced, intent on doing more damage.

“Looks like your little monster here was able to force you back to how you were, isn’t that amusing?” the voice in her head whispered. “What will you do now? Are you strong enough without that other presence doing all the fighting for you?”

“Shut up! I’ll do what I have to do to protect everyone! I’ll fight to my last breath if I have to. I can’t let this creature past me!” Rose shouted out.

“Who- Who is she talking to?” Mason asked.

“I think anyone would go crazy in this situation, but…” Kurz trailed off, he could tell that something was different now, it was clear to see that Rose often fell silent during her fights, something he’d only really picked up when the larger monster attacked. What this actually meant though, he didn’t know. He hoped it was a good omen rather than the opposite, they needed some luck right about now.

“In that case, fight away ‘Rose’. Show me how far that’ll get you…” the voice chided.

This time, Rose didn’t answer the voice, she instead charged in without any further hesitation, but the results were even worse than last time. Now the creature didn’t even bother dodging her attacks, it just stood there as Rose’s hits did nothing. Even her kicks no longer caused any reaction when they landed, the creature shrugging them all off. It’s eye focused on her, and then it attacked again, beating her down with rapid punches, before kicking her away.

Rose groaned as she rolled over, clutching her side. She was battered, bruised but still alive, and despite the pain and the encroachment of her vision, she stood once more.

“I can’t…I can’t give up!” She said like a mantra.

The creature almost looked amused, as it went to strike again, not wanting to give her any ground. It made it half way to her when another roar stopped it dead.

“Not another monster!” Mason cried out.

Kurz fell back into the sand upon hearing it, his will drained completely.

The roar was accompanied by the sound of something racing across the ground, its heavy feet making it sound like a stampede.

Rose was the first one to see it, and her eyes grew wide as she recognised it instantly. This new intruder was the same beast she and Neal encountered when they met only a day or so ago. It still bore the wounds that she had inflicted on it whilst in the other state. She herself couldn’t remember the fight, not completely, but she did remember that she spared it’s life, not wanting to kill needlessly. The T-rex-like beast crashed into the other creature with tremendous force, catching it by surprise, and moving it backwards, away from Rose.

“Is it…Protecting me?” Rose asked, not that there was anyone near her to give an answer.

The T-rex-like monster backed off slightly, before swinging its tail around, but the other creature, now more prepared, took the blow in its stride before lashing out at the interloper.

“The monsters are fighting each other? That’s a new one.” Mason’s emotions had run the gauntlet from fear all the way back to surprise.

Kurz managed to sit himself back up, already watching what was unfolding.

“What is going on?” he uttered. He noted that the creature seemed to match the description his grandfather had given him before. What the importance of that was, he didn’t know right now. Before he could even speculate, the ground shook again, and another familiar cry filled the air. No sooner had the T-Rex creature turned up, but the ground heaved, and the spider-like monster from only a few hours earlier shot up from the ground, blood still seeping from where Rose cut off the eye stalk. With fangs bared it went for the humanoid creature, its sheer size allowing it to crash into the humanoid creature, causing cracks to appear in its reforged skin.

Rose was baffled by the scene playing out in front of her.

“Those pests…What are they doing?” Even the voice in her head was surprised.

“They’re both protecting me…” Rose realised.

The humanoid creature leapt into the air, giving it some breathing room against the other two.

The T-Rex and the Spider creatures didn’t follow up, instead they deliberately put themselves in front of Rose, making it perfectly clear that any attempt at her would have to go through them. The humanoid creature, frustrated by the new obstacles, let loose a horrifying howl as its body changed once more. It kept the same size but its portions became more muscular, and more spikes covered its body. Its molten skin turned a deep crimson.

Even with numbers on her side, Rose knew that this fight wasn’t over yet…
